Half Bath Refresh

Any feedback on more I could do to improve our half bath?

I did refresh of our downstairs half bath on a budget. We’re in process of finishing remodel of our kitchen and I’d rather reserve extra money for kitchen and other projects.

I wanted to do my best to distract from the late 1960s cultured marble countertop. I’ve slowly worked on it for 4 months. I don’t have many before pics. Still need to do paint touch up on cabinets which I sanded but overall I’m really happy with it until we do decide to replace vanity top and possibly cabinet.

Projects were:
I put up canvas mounted artwork from our own trips/photos (mixtiles), high end marble accessories, preserved flowers and eucalyptus, designer vases, excavated out painted over screws and hinges by hand with a screwdriver and razor, boiled hinges to remove disgusting old paint from them, used rub and buff in silver leaf to change color on old hinges, DIY’d a mirror frame, replaced sconce glass, repaired rusted sink with epoxy paint, sanded the 1968 cultured marble vanity top to remove the rust stains and cleaned with gel gloss, removed old caulking. Floors were already marble we installed a few years ago. Overall I’m really happy with it for now until we can replace vanity and top.

What a wonderful refresh.
It’s so good to see that a room doesn’t have to be gutted to bring it up to now. You have made the most of what it had, and with some time and effort brought it back to a quality room. Working with it in your accessories has just improved it.

Yes, I was thinking of the half-bath coming in from the garage as the "family" half-bath, exactly. The other one near the front entrance would mostly be for guests and to have another toilet to use when entertaining. I agree with Palimpsest's suggestion of making it a 3/4 bath (i.e. a full bath with a shower instead of a tub). That would let you shrink it so it doesn't eat into the LR, and create more separation, but it will still list as a 2BR/2ba on any real estate listing. (I've never seen "1.75 bath" in a listing--a full bath is a place where you can wash yourself, and whether that's a shower or a tub it's still a full bath; AFAIK people just call it a 3/4 bath to be more precise, but a realtor's still going to call it 2 bath). I think the 3/4 bath idea will accomplish both of the things you want to accomplish here. It will let you shrink the space and give it more separation and privacy, but it will still keep your house technically as a 2BR/2ba, so when you're trying to sell it, potential buyers won't automatically cross you off the list as soon as they read "1.5 bath" in your listing. Also, maybe this is a stupid question, but not seeing your layout I can't be sure. So here goes: Is there any way things can be reoriented in that bathroom so that it doesn't open directly into the living room? What are the other walls adjacent to, and what's nearby, and where is it at least theoretically possible to move the door to? Could it possibly open into a hallway?

Isn't half.com great? I went to the mall to look for a Stephen King audio book over the weekend, and it was $20 for a 2 hour audio book. Forget that. So I went home and found it at half.com for $11 with shipping, and I found another audio book of Stephen King that I haven't heard and paid $8 with shipping for that. So for less than $20 I got 2 books to listen to. Cool!

@shirlpp - We need a mirror for the vanity so it has to be against a wall. As for shower on the window side, it's a rather large window, we would have to replace it with something smaller. @littlebug zone 5 Missouri Thanks for the input. That kitchen island is not really an island and can be removed. We're thinking of closing off the master access to the kitchen door but those late night snack route to the kitchen would be much longer haha. We're gonna put some thoughts into this. @eld6161 Thanks for the photo. I can picture the layout from your post. I think our space is a bit bigger so this might work.

Very nice job! You understand that it is all in the details. And I appreciate the details like the cleaned up hinges, the revitalized countertop, the de-rusted sink, etc. Bravo!

Green hand towels to complement the art and arrangement in the vase. If you did buy a new faucet you could always reuse it in a new vanity later, so not a bad idea from Rachael Lee.

Good job! Two thoughts: the faux plant in the vase. I like both, but not in the small space. Could you find a spot in the living room or hallway and replace with something smaller?

Bring in more dark green to continue it in your scheme.

Hi Elcieg, Thank you for feedback I really like the green towel color you found. I do have another place I can put vase and I also have a smaller plant as well. The Silver Dollar Eucalyptus is actually real/not fake. As well as the roses.
