PICS...3 mos after the fact!!!
Comments (23)Okay, I'm back tonight. Sorry that I don't address anyone specifically here, but I think I'll be getting everyone's questions answered nonetheless. I really do appreciate hearing from everyone. Thanks for the 'good vibes' sent as well. I have had to move to OR to live with my parents for a couple months while I undergo some treatment for Meniere's disease (think vertigo and riding the tilt-a-whirl at the same time). I've got the 1 yr old with me but the other two (2 and 6) are with daddy back home in our lovely new house. Rather ironic, huh? It's been nuts, to say the least. So anyways...to answer all your questions...! 1) Yes, that is a Bluestar you spied in the kitchen. We got the 48" with 2 burners on each side and the 24" griddle in the middle. My DH is a true BBQ guy, so no point having an indoor grill for us. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND the Bluestar. We can bring to boil a lg pot of water on the 22k burner in 12 minutes or less. That's cold well water to start with. And we love using the griddle. I don't think I would like it so much if we had gone with the smaller size (12 or 18" ?). The 24" is perfect . 2) I purchased all my mirrors from Lamps Plus online. Most of them were Quoizel brand, which also happened to be the main lighting brand we used as well. 3) We used granite or marble for all the countertops in the house except the laundry room and a small little spot in the pantry. Oh, and the solid surface one for the home office. The countertop in the media bath is "Rainforest Green", or "Amazon Green" marble. 4) The Mstr Bdr paint colors: We used Columbia Paint's "Land Before Time" for the green and "Brown Suede" for the brown ceiling edge treatment. It took awhile to find just the right green to go with that bedding! 5) Ah, the pantry rolling shelves--you would not believe how many people ask about that! We bought them at Costco over a year ago (and much cheaper that way), but they are from a company called "ShelfReliance". They are based out of Utah. I put a link on to their site. 6) We went with the Dynasty (Omega) cabinet line, "Bancroft" style throughout. All doors and drawers have the soft close and I love it! The Kitchen, Gt Rm and Mstr are cherry and have the 'Ginger Coffee' finish. The kitchen island is maple in the distressed black paint finish. All other cabs are alder and mostly in the 'Sage' finish. I did do "Butternut Onyx" in the 1/2 bath and the desks in the bedrooms (but not the home office) are (I think) "Cinnamon". 7) The walnut staircase was another 'baby' of mine in the planning. Actually, the whole dang house was, come to think of it! We didn't use any stain on it other than clear so that we could get the natural grain patterns to really show. I am SO glad we did it. 8) The boys' 'copper slate' bathroom IS masculine, but I also took into consideration that a girl would probably be okay with it too--just in case! We have 3 boys, so odds are... Most lighting is Quoizel. Plumbing fixtures are Moen. The Mstr tub is UltraBain. Toilets are Kohler. Mstr sinks are DuraVit. Other bath sinks American Standard. Kitchen sinks are Moen 'Lancelot Pro' line. All paint is Columbia Paint, but I had them color match from other companies for just about everything. Doorknobs all Baldwin. Cabinet hardware a bunch of brands, but the main company was 'Anne At Home'. Fridge and freezer are 'Northland' commercial units that have only been changed to be quieter for residential use. The siding outside is HardiPlank brand that was factory painted before delivery in 'New Pilgrim Red' color. Comments (49)not to throw you a total curve, but the reason the Hawaiians and missionaries used koa, mango, and other exotic woods is because they stand up to the humidity (I'm on Oahu). You see a lot of teak around the island - also used on boats as it does not swell - but its color is lighter - and often more Scandinavian in design. Rattan used a lot and I love the look, but impossible in my mind to keep really clean looking over time as dust and crumbs fall in. Pacific Craftworks on Oahu sells custom cabinets made from mostly darker colored woods in Viet Nam - another tropical place - that should hold up to Hawaii weather (no affiliation) - some looks like mahogany but different wood. We used them in our master bath and the prices weren't bad. The dark woods are traditional but too much can make the room feel heavy. Hawaiian homes were influenced by missionaries from New England, cowboys, Balinese, Chinese, Japanese, Filipinos, Europeans, and plantation owners. So we don't have a purely beach feel - the white rattan look is more East Coast. Tropical is the darker, wider strip, rattan. Here it is all about moss rock, exotic woods, flowers, surfboards, waves, turtles, pineapple, dark sea blues and green foliage mixed with white, cream, and woven mats. If you stick to the white (which will look clean, fresh, and airy) make sure they are quality boxes to hold up to the humidity. For the Hawaii vibe decorate with a few koa or monkeypod (less expensive) chairs, coffee table, or a bowl on your counter, bring in the light and the air and avoid kitsch. Your koa fan will tie into those accents. The one you have chosen is very modern looking and I understand that fewer blades (3 to 4) move more air than 5. Traditionally locals used lots of fans to move the trade winds and homes were designed to pull in the trades. Don't fall for a kitschy fan if it doesn't function well. Suggest any fabrics have local tropical flowers (ginger, heliconia) in large, lush prints. Your inspiration Kauai cottage has beautiful accent pillows that illustrate this - the upholstery is beige but the pillows have heliconia and tropical leaves to bring in color....See MoreHow do we get in the bedroom?
Comments (38)Adding another doorway in the wall may require you to rearrange your living room because it takes away wall space, which is probably already at a premium given your open plan. You can regain the width of a doorway by filling in the built-in, which you describe as "awkward". The additional benefit is that you also gain full depth hanging space in your walk in closet, although it is already very spacious. It would be very helpful for us to know the location of the toilet along that wall. I am assuming that the toilet location cannot be moved easily. Maybe we could configure a separate toilet enclosure if that is something you are interested in. Also, do you prefer one long vanity with 2 sinks, or each person has their own vanity? (I would prefer separate, but YMMV.)...See MoreKitchen before & after
Comments (50)@Beth Bickel I knew I wanted just knobs so it looked more like furniture. Athena Calderone used these and I loved her kitchen. The floors are En Bois Brittany in the Bay Street color. I love how they look worn and have a matte finish. Absolutely no sheen. They feel so nice underfoot. https://www.enboisflooring.com/bay-street...See MoreRelated Professionals
