Comments (11)Regarding the recipe, 1/2 cup of 12-12-12 is too much unless spread evenly over an area of, say, 4 x 4'.. For an average plant I apply a handful, less than 3 oz. Chemical fertilizer needs to be applied more than once a year because the nitrogen only lasts 6 weeks, regardless of quantity applied. The bone meal is redundant since the 12-12-12 has way more phosphate than the rose can use in a year. The chicken manure poses a risk of burning if applied along with a lot of chemical fertilizer-- both contain fast nitrogen. Mixed organic fertilizers are usually applied at 1-2 cups per square yard and maybe 5 cups per year for your very long growing season. Comments (7)Early watering of trees before a night time freeze ABSOLUTELY does give some protection in a "dry" climate or in any area of the country, for that matter, during a period with a low outside relative humidity. I would do exactly what Jose did to INTENTIONALLY increase the relative humidity around my little in ground trees. Water vapor is by far the largest green house gas that we have....man made or other wise....(Al Gore and his Global Warming crowd & our news Media would prefer that you not know this science fact). By increasing the water vapor in the areas around these trees, you WILL effectively trap some of the ground's "radiation" heat around those trees. What is trapped by this added water vapor is some of radiation heat that is quickly lost to the atmosphere after the sun goes down. Ever notice how hot a desert is in the daytime......and then how cold it is at night???? This large variation in temperature occurs simply because there is no humidity (water vapor) in the desert air. If there was some water vapor in the air, the daytime and night time temperatures wouldn't swing as much. If you could somehow increase the relative humidity of the desert air, it simply would not get as cold at night.....nor as hot during the daytime. I do agree, however, that there is also some good benefits to watering at the time of coldest temperature (closer to sunrise)....due to the latent heat of fusion effects that occur right at the freeing point (melting point) of water as it starts to change from the liquid phase (water) to the solid phase (ice). Too, it is because of this same latent effect that provides protection to fruit trees that have ice already on the branches. Keep the water sprinklers on even when you see ice (or frost) on the leaves and branches and this latent heat will keep the temperature from dropping below 32 deg. F.........that is a warm enough temperature to save a lot of trees from severe damage. Too, if somehow you can't prevent plain ole frost from forming on your trees (which can easily occur at temperatures as high as 40 deg F in my area)..........get at them with a sprinkler or hose pipe as soon as you see it and you WILL PREVENT some damage. Comments (31)She can't do the challenges, she should have been pulled. Totally unfair that she is allowed to stay but doesn't do the challenges. Keith absolutely deserves to win. Big deal if he spits, seriously. He has not been mean or vindictive, he rocks in challenges for the most part, busts his butt at camp,he even helped Missy, and not just at tribal, he helped her at the reward also. Missy and Baylor are the ones that are disgusting to me. Worthless and undeserving. It was particularly offensive to me when Missy kept clinging to "being loyal to Jon". Gag me, that explains THREE divorces. She is one of those women who NEEDS a mans approval, and will do whatever it takes to get it. Jaclyn is a hanger on, she hung onto Jon's coattails, and that's what it's going to look like to the jury. I like Natalie better the longer the game goes on. Comments (6)I think you are asking the wrong question. 5-10-10 is really a ratio. That's what's important, not the actual numbers themselves because by applying per the directions you are delivering the proper amount to the plant. 5-10-10 means that for every part of Nitrogen, you are also delivering two parts each of Phosphorus and Potassium. The Roots Organic at 0.5-2-1.5 isn't that ratio. For every one part of Nitrogen, it is also adding four parts of Phosphorus and three parts of Potassium. Depending on how much you feed you will either be underfeeding Nitrogen or overfeeding Phosphorus/Potassium. It is the wrong fertilizer formulation. You want a fertilizer where the N is one half of the value of the P and the K, and then feed according directions. It can be 5-10-10 or 2.5-5-5 or 1-2-2 or 10-20-20. It's the relationships between the numbers that is key, because you can always dilute or concentrate depending on how often you are feeding....See More- 3 years ago
