I think I should cut 3 clematis back to 12" - they are in pots

I have 3 clematis that are temporarily in 2 gallon containers. I dug them up because they weren't getting enough sun. I hope to plant them soon. They did bloom in their prior homes but didn't get very tall, again from lack of sun I think. I think I should cut them all back to 12" or so. There are no buds forming yet.
Does it sound ok to cut them back to 12"?
Thanks, Ginny
