Super low-maintenance tall shrub rose with fragrance?
Comments (3)Hansa is another Rugosa that folks like, nice reddish purple color. Roses Unlimited has a sale $8 gallon-size own-root last June....delivered to your house with blooms! They will have that sale soon, either 2nd week or 3rd week of June. Kordes Roses are very disease-resistant..... Roses Unlimited sale is sold out fast ... they won't take orders through e-mails ... phone calls only, and checks sent through mail only. It's the rose vendor with the most customer satisfaction, 25 years in business. If you google, "the scoop on ..... "name of nursery", that will give you people's reviews of any nursery in the country, be it bulbs, perennials, or roses. Best to call Roses Unlimited when the sale starts this month, and ask for the type of roses you want, and they will recommend, 1/2 off own-roots, which are much healthier than grafted on Dr. Huey. Comments (11)That is indeed strange that another person found a way to post as you!!! Red Leonardo sent me scurrying to HMF. How big does it get for you in VA? I've been searching for a heart-be-still red, other than my lovely Mr. Lincoln, and this may be it. Francois Rabelais showed up as bright orange-red in our nursery! Phooey. L D Braithwaite, Red Eden, Rouge Royal, The Squire and William Shakespeare 2000 are ones I haven't seen in person and would like to. Comments from all are welcome - true color, growth size or disease problems....See MoreDo roses acclimatise to strong sun?
Comments (12)Thank you, Jackie & Ingrid! Jackie - I'm in Western Australia and we have "Mediterranean weather" with hot, dry summers (temps up into the 40's C / 100s F sometimes and very low humidity) and very mild, sunny winters. I only have a tiny garden (seriously tiny) and have pretty much filled it up with David Austins (!) but I am still learning about roses and will definitely look into teas and chinas as you recommended. I was really specifically wondering about Pat Austin as she's the only one I'm worried about - since everyone says she really needs shade - and it's hard for me to give it to her, given the position she's in. Ingrid - I'm sure you're right! I have to just try things myself in my own garden and see. I guess I'm being an impatient newbie. :-) Also, I'm worried about doing things wrong so I keep trying to make sure I'm not making a terrible mistake so I can try to correct things early. But I suppose maybe what I need to learn is that there is no specific "right" or "wrong" in gardening...!...See MoreTrue red, highly fragrant, low thorn rose that stays small?
Comments (46)Thank you, Stephanie. Mine has some thorns but not a lot. It's classified as a Bourbon some places...to me it looks like it could have tea or China in it. The stems are pretty and green, with only the oldest stems brown and woody. It does have a strong fragrance, sweet and peppery. I don't remember where I got it but I think it was from Almost Heaven Roses or from Jackie Day who was partners with Lisa at Countryside Roses. I know it wasn't from ARE. Here it is a little deeper color: see above. I have a second plant of Maggie in a different spot and it is not that big...it is maybe 5' tall and 4' wide. For fragrant red hybrid teas I think Oklahoma is my favorite. Blooms are huge, a beautiful dark red, rebloom is good and I don't think it's that prone to blackspot. Here's Griff's Red, a very healthy Buck. I find it moderately fragrant but some don't. Roses Unlimited might have that one..they have a big selection of Bucks....See Morerifis (zone 6b-7a NJ)
