Roses grown for their foliage, thorns or unique attributes
Comments (37)Sherry, I think that refers to rootstock suckers. If you cut them off it's like pruning the rootstock suckering growth, which is invigorated and grows back more enthusiastically than before. I'm glad you like the sound of R. gallica 'Splendens': it is a handsome creature. Mine has started suckering (top growth) in the last year or two, and perhaps I'll be able to get a bit of it and plant it somewhere a bit more accessible than its current position. I have a notion that some of these Asian jungle giants are just not adapted to our garden conditions. I've failed with R. laevigata, and 'Cooper's Burmese' is puny. Both of these could be just poor siting and site preparation, too. I mourn our lack of big trees able to support humongous climbers. Melissa...See MoreWhat is the Best TRUE red rose??
Comments (51)Openmoon, I have grown 3 of the four roses you have side by side images of, what I see is "spot on"; especially in the heat. In addition to the four you have shown, Crimson Bouquet was another true red rose; it was not orangey- red, deep dark red, and did not turn pinkish in the sun. Mr. Lincoln turned pinkish as soon as it became hot. My favorite however was Veteran's Honor. Seil, your image of V.H. is precisely what I remember. Gorgeous, classic hybrid tea. "Get over your black spot or die, it's all the same to me." They mostly get over it." My thoughts exactly. I don't pay any attention foliage problems, as long as the plant grows and blooms. Souvenir de la Malmaison has turned out to be a good bloomer, it has blooms right now when most don't. My Just Joey was either a poor plant ($1 clearance at Fred Meyer) or planted in a bad spot because it has not grown much. I was going to buy Tamora but went to the nursery and it had such terrible thorns I ended up getting Evelyn, Heritage, and Apricot Nectar instead. I kind of wish I had gotten Tamora anyway though because I like peachy colors. I got Westerland bareroot this year but it suffered dieback in the hot spells and is very small. I planted it in the ground anyway so I hope it makes it. I may dig up Edith Schurr again as she looks like she is declining, no leaves and only 5" of stem left. My Buck rose Distant Drums is a really good rose for cutting, usually covered with blooms, and fairly long stems. I like the buff centers on magenta flowers, and the peculiar scent, but some don't- my MIL. The rosesant forum has great Buck rose photos now, especially Carefree Beauty, loaded with blooms for an extended bloom time. My Knockout rose also blooms like that, in a neglected area of the yard where it doesn't even get watered in summer....See MoreRose recommendation-fragrant, thorny, and with rose hips
Comments (12)The Rugosas sucker on their own roots, don't they? Roots spread out & throw up new canes in an ever-expanding patch over time. Might want to find a grafted one if this wouldn't work in your space. Thorniest rose I grow is Aloha Hawaii, a shortish climber whose main canes are literally studded with thick long sharp thorns. Can be grown as a stocky shrub with pruning or allowed to frame the window for a double deterrent. Blooming laterals not as bad as the main canes, but no one could wade through it without a suit of armor. Fragrant double blooms in a range of sunset hues that repeat well & often from early to late here. Lovely fat hips if not deadheaded. HelpMeFind says occasional bloom after the first flush, but Member Ratings average out to Good- from 11 feedback reports. Bloom frequency increased with age here to 4-5 flushes at 4 years old. Nippstress grows this in zone 5b Nebraska. http://www.helpmefind.com/gardening/l.php?l=2.39802.4&tab=1 Keep in mind that it would be a barrier if you ever needed to exit through that window, though.
