Plant now or wait until Fall?
Comments (11)Matt, You question surprised me because I knew that you already knew the standard answer....and you also knew that you have the know-how/experience to succeed with a mid-summer planting. But, if hearing some of us say 'go ahead' makes you feel better, then I'll say it again---go ahead and do it. Joellen, The reason many containerized trees often do not do well and/or have a high failure rate is because they start out with a tiny amount of roots in comparison to topgrowth. I'm a backwards tree and shrub planting person. Most people want to plant the largest tree or shrub they can afford to buy, but I want to plant the absolute smallest ones available. Why? I want root growth that is adequate to support the top growth. When we planted trees around our newly constructed home which was in what was essentially an old cow pasture, we dug up oak seedlings from the woods and transplanted them up around the house. At the time we dug them, most of them had a 12" or bigger root ball and the trees themselves were 4 to 12" tall. In about nine or ten years, most of those trees have grown to be over 15' tall. Some are close to 20'. I'm a big believer that smaller is better when planting trees since it gives you a more evenly balanced tree. Bareroot plants do great if planted in fall or winter so they can establish roots before the summer heat arrives. Dawn...See Morewhy why WHY do I always wait until the last minute?
Comments (10)You guys are too much :-). And I'm shocked at how much a 2 year old's attitude resembles that of a belligerent teen! The refusing to answer when spoken to, the ignoring of direct instructions, the odd eating habits... No wait lists for any of the hotels but I did manage to find a room via Travelocity. The funny thing is that when I specified the town as "Mansfield" the hotel came up as available but changed to unavailable when I tried to book rooms. A call to the hotel itself confirmed that, no available rooms. But when I changed the town to "ashland" (about 20 miles away) the exact same hotel came up as available & allowed me to book rooms. So I did. Printed up my confirmation so I have proof. Now I'm even toying with the idea of flying out & renting a car. What with the cost of gas in my area it wouldn't be all that much more money! But I'm liking the thought of camping more & more & maybe later in the season we can get away for a few days to just camp. bring the little guy & the dog & play wild slumber party in the tent. Both the little guy & the dog would love it. Thankfully we have a big tent! Melanie, I'm beating myself up because I know better. I consciously left this until the last minute. It's a bad, bad habit of mine. I insist that I work better under pressure :-). Yes, Bill, how far west are you heading? And since you're in Maine have you ever done the trip east to Nova Scotia? Now that's a spectacular holiday! Nina...See MoreMove in after final or wait until every last thing is done?
Comments (12)We lived onsite in an ancient (and horrible) mobile home while our house was being built. We couldn't wait to get in, but with a small house didn't want to be in the way, so we did a minimal move-in. We moved only the essentials (food, some clothes, etc.), but we waited to move the bulk of our furniture and belongings. Granted, it was only my husband and me, but even with your children you have easy access to things you realize you need for the interim. With every other house we've owned, we had a short timeline to move out of the old house and into the new, so it felt luxurious to take our time bringing in items, arranging furniture, filling bookshelves, organizing closets and cupboards without having to maneuver around boxes....See Morerepot now or wait until spring? Comments (5)Hello..I doubt the issue of your leaves falling is the roots..They look very well built and even perfect from this vantage point! I would slip it right back into that container and instead wash each and every leaf off...I would treat for spider mites since it looks like it might have some sort of pest issue..Mites can cause leaf drop and leaves that look almost pale and soft, as if the tree is thirsty..That is what I see... Do you see those tiny white specs on those leaves? I would check underneath and even post some pics here to see if you have pest issues for sure..It's that time of the year almost everyone will get some sort of pest issue if not treated... I would only water when the pot feels light and I am thinking it dries out pretty rapidly with that many healthy roots in that pot, your protection from over watering until the late spring comes to do a completely right re pot into the 5.1.1 mix.. if you find that it takes time for the mix to dry out even though you have healthy full roots like that to fill that pot, then for sure you have mites preventing the roots from doing their job, bringing up moisture to your leaves.. P.S...You do have an IVY plant close by? Those usually are very susceptible to spider mites..I would treat all those local plants since even the tree to the left seems to be affected too.....See More- 3 years ago
