Q: How do I encourage new branch from a trunk?

last year

A major branch died on a dogwood in my backyard, severely misshaping the tree.

Is it possible to encourage the growth of a new branch a/o graft an existing branch anywhere of my choosing on the trunk of this—or any—tree?

Alternatively (and preferred), is it possible to graft an existing branch to a location of my choosing on the trunk of this—or any—tree?

If so, what is/are the procedure(s)

In theory, you can graft a branch from the tree to the site of your choosing. However, you can't graft a big branch and you have to deal with why the dead branch died. Usually, a tree will produce a new branch where there's an opening, such as in the space left by a removed branch. I'd certainly wait a year or two to see if this happens. Grafting is pretty tough to get to work.

the tree is taking on a new form... accept it.. its old form is gone..

unless you have decades of grafting experience.. i doubt you can graft a tiny piece on an old mature tree.. though weirder things have happened..

give us a few pix.. and let us help you prune it .. rejuvenation pruning comes to mind ...

the past is dead and gone.. accept it.. and move on .. with no insult to the root mass.. and presuming the plant is otherwise healthy.. you might be surprised how fast is can regenerate ..

do we have any idea why that part died???

Peace is a very upright grower and like most HTs is not a heavy brancher to begin with. If you want to try you can prune it low and then as it grows out cut the tips of each cane to see if it will give you more branches. It may not work because it may still only send out one new cane at each prune so your canes will end up looking sort of stepped instead of long and straight. And you will be delaying the bloom on it with each prune but you might try it.

You don't need two stakes: they are used on city trees to keep a new tree from bending too much in the wind, but your tree is so small that shouldn't be a problem. Just sink a sturdy upright next to the trunk, and tie your leader to it. I believe you can use twine; but I am no expert and maybe someone else will come along and give you more information. As for not pruning in damp weather, I imagine this is to reduce the chance of fungal infection, but I'm not sure if that's an issue when one is pruning off deadwood as you are. My general tendency is to prune when I have the time!

I already went and snipped some of the side branches and a portion of the main branch. I watched tons of videos to make sure that I would do it right, but I'm doubtful I made all the right cuts. I put some of my cuttings in water hoping that at least one would root and I could stick it back in to the pot. How hopeful am I (haha)?

My problem with Austins that get to be giants is that they don't seem to bloom well. I've tried training them as climbers but it hasn't worked out well so far. I am not sure whether this is just due to lack of resources (poor soil, not enough fertilizing),or whether it's just that the plants simply aren't capable of supporting all that green growth and blooming profusely as well. I plan to experiment with both pruning them back severely and with trying to fertilize more,but I confess that, with all the roses that I have, I find it difficult to coddle specific ones. This is the main reason why I'm not a big fan of Austins in general.
