A 9' Christmas tree is tall. Very, very tall.
Comments (6)Lucky you, callaloo, to have the stairs to aid in your decorating. I find the ladder work a little treacherous on our 9 1/2 foot tree, but it looks really nice in our vaulted space. We bought it out of necessity a few years ago after we limped through the final Christmas with our 20+ year old 6 footer... DH called me when I was out shopping and said don't ask any questions but stop at a hardware store before I come home and bring him a sandbag. Huh? I did so, and found the sad remains of our old tree when I got home. Each year it seemed that tree looked more sparce so we fluffed more branches in front and left the bare patch against the wall. Apparently that thing was so bare on the back that it should've been hanging on the wall! Turns out DH and our 2 youngest children had been putting on ornaments when it just toppled over, burying the kids underneath. Hubby thought they had been knocked out because there was utter silence, but it turned out they were so terrified they didn't even know how to react. I lost a few of my favorite ornaments that year, and yes, we hid the sandbag under the treeskirt and DH tied the upper part of the tree to a hook in a wall stud. AH, Christmas memories! Did I mention I really like our new tree? :)...See MoreAdvice for decorating large, very tall wall with niches in family room
Comments (8)Thank you everyone for your suggestions! I've considered closing the niche above the fireplace, but that will leave only 6" on the mantle which isn't much space for decor. I agree that it would allow more options for art up above. I do have a large chest to the left of the fireplace right now. The trouble with that is there is little space for traffic between it and the end of the sectional. If I shift it left, it looks off balance and is facing a direct walking path. And I don't really want to rotate the sectional against the windows although that would improve the narrow traffic problem. All the above pics were taken after the wood floor was refinished, but before I put any accessories, decor, etc. back up. I wanted to show a "blank slate". (I am working on getting an area rug) If I stick with everyone's suggestions, my next questions are: How high up should I try to decorate the fireplace niche? And should I do anything behind the tv? I've had nothing there and it looks blank, and I've put up a very large piece of art and it looks too busy. It seems like there are too many focal points. Here are some pics that show earlier attempts at decorating. The silver vase with floral is probably close to 48" high. Please ignore the floral behind the tv, that is not normally there. Pic #1 was right before they moved the furniture out for the flooring, so all my extras were already in storage....See MoreDesign Help, large blank tall wall in living room
Comments (12)I really like your remodel. love the kitchen cabinet color. One idea for that long tall wall is to perhaps add a tall cabinet to the left of the sofa, possibly an open bookcase or a tall closed cabinet, depending on if you need storage or perhaps a place to show some of your treasures you might have or books, a large piece of art above the sofa and then to the right a side table with a tall floor lamp. the floor lamp will balance off the tall cabinet on the left and the sofa and art above will connect the middle part of the wall to the two ends. a few ideas on tall cabinets.......See MoreTrying to combine two rooms into one large kitchen but very odd shape
Comments (25)Using @itsourcasa layout as an example to illustrate your plans vs theirs, I have marked in RED the "foundation wall" of the kitchen (where you base your focus from and eminate it out from there, if you will). In BLUE is living/dining in the same manner. In ORANGE are those pesky humans. See how with itsourcasa there is interaction, communication, and focus directed on areas where people naturally want to congregrate? In yours, see how you have segregated that? To be clear, this is not an "open concept" kitchen vs a "closed kitchen," you can easily open up some of a wall and still feel like a "closed kitchen" if that is what you prefer. Rather, it is the segregation and diverging focus of the adjacencies. Also, functionally I would think the kitchen would want to be close/interact with the Party room and outdoor eating when the pool area is such a dominant force in this property....See MoreHU-687348079
