Fertilize in intervals. It does no good for the wallet or environment by overfertilizing. How long ago did you spread that fertilizer. How big of patch do you have, squarefeet? So, I would assume then, that I would be laying down a grain application starting around March (before the grass starts to really grow) and then approximately each month (maybe skipping a month in the heat of summer) until October or early November (if we get snow, it doesn't usually happen until December, and generally we'd only have snow on the ground for Dec, maybe Jan and maybe some of Feb, when the early flowering cherry trees start to bloom). Is there any harm in increasing the alfalfa to more than 20lb per 1000sqft? For example, if I put down ~22lb per 750sqft, to make just 2 applications of alfalfa per year. Or is that just a waste because the lawn won't need or use the extra amount? I'll keep the soybean at 14lbs per 1000 max, in order to mitigate the smell issue (: Thanks again. Yes, I think it will be fine. Just be sure it has enough water thru the summer and don't fertilize it with chemical ferts the rest of the year. You could maybe foliar feed it when it gets more leaves with either miracle grow, or I use liquid seaweed or fish emulsion. Do it on a cloudy day or late in the evening if humidity is low and it's warm enough to evaporate fairly quickly. If you really have deplete soil you could put some superphosphate around the roots in January next year. Helps with vigor and bloom.

Yes, do a soil test. Your questions cannot be answered without a soil test. Without knowing how much calcium or magnesium or trace minerals are in your soil, and how much leaches out each year (if any), then it's just a guessing game. But sometimes and educated guess is all we have so here's mine. 4-5 pounds of calcium is not very much spread over 470 square feet. It's downright miniscule. Last year I put down 320 pounds on a 1300 square foot area after soil test recommendations. Your bag of lime is telling your 12 pounds per 1000 square feet, but that recommendation has nothing to do with your particular soil. Adding 10-10-10 fertilizer might be a good idea if your soil is deficient in all three of those nutrients. But is it? I started getting a soil test every year for the last couple years. I found out my Potassium level was way high. I knew that already from regional data. My Phosphorous was also pretty high, surprise, so I stopped adding bone meal. My Calcium was way low even though I was adding lime every year. And my Magnesium was average so I stopped adding that because high Magnesium will harden the soils around here. My Sulfur was a bit low which was good to know. All my other minerals were within reasonable levels. Organic matter level was good. Ph was a bit low but quite reasonable. It's really good to have that soil test data. Until something changes, I'm not adding anything except Nitrogen each year.
