(PICTURES) oops... think maybe I made a big $$$$ mistake.

Some of you may recall, and helped me during my search for my foyer chest or console. I had several 'maybes' and decided that I would wait a couple weeks until I was actually in the house to make up my mind.

Well.... yesterday I decided instead of packing, I'd go look at furniture for fun. I didn't intend on buying... but I saw this floor model chest, reduced over 50% of retail price and I really, really liked it and it was a bit different! Size wise... it was a good size, not too long or deep. Color wise, it LOOKED like it was a nice warm medium brown, but that's the issue. Once DH brought it home this afternoon, it looks MUCH darker than it did in the store under their fluorescent lights.

I am posting pictures, and asking for comments - good, bad and in between. The photo looks pretty true to color on my screen.

I think that it is a lovely chest -- and a really pretty color! A bit of contrast against the surroundings is always nice!

Remember -- you really can't judge whether or not it will work until it is in place -- with a mirror above it -- and a lamp (or two) on it!

I love it! It's dark wood. You would have more problems with lighter wood. Dark never clashes.

Take it out now. If you want that general shape, in a smaller version, the 2 arborvitae cultivars 'Green Giant' (matures at around 50', 15-25' wide) or 'Emerald Green'/'Emerald Beauty'/'Smaragd'* (matures at around 20-25' x 8-12' wide) might do. If both of those are too big, T. 'De Groot's Spire' might work (12-15' x 3-4'). If none of those appeal, how about a holly? There are various cultivars, with various growth habits - some judicious pruning might help with height and width, although it's better, IMO, to start out with one that will grow as you want. * I don't know if these are all the same cultivar, with different nurseries giving them different names or not, but they all grow about the same, and look about the same.

Never plant the tall Mexican ruellia in Houston! ( I like the short clumping Katy ruellia.) That plant is the curse of my garden. My master gardener friend gave me on purple and one white. the purple has marched more than 1/2 way around the fence borders. She failed to mention that she pulled them all the time and her many paved pathways helped to keep them contained. I sprayed it with Round Up and it shot seeds at me and made popcorn sounds. (That hurt, too!) They grow 7 ft tall in up through my lemonade honeysuckle vine and laugh at me over the tops of the suburban fences. I have pull and paid others hundreds of dollars to pull and they keep coming back, since they also send out awful runners. This plant survived the poison ivy and brush killer and Ground Clear, as did wedellia. The wedellia was gone for three year, cam back and jumped to another bed. I would pour gasoline on them both if I knew that would kill them. The wedellia roots where it the leaf nodes touch the ground and smothered my daylilies.

Still haven’t decided. This is what it looks like currently with paint and all trim. It is growing on me. I imagine once backsplash and flooring and pendant lights are in, I won’t notice it as much. But I don’t want to regret not having him fix it forever. Builder has offered to move soffit back to be flush with cabinets and we will put a piece of flat trim at cabinet and soffit joint. He did mention being concerned with the possibility of damaging cabinets in the process. He also said he would remove soffit altogether if we want. Again the only concern being the cabinets potentially being damaged. I have to decide soon.

Happy New Year! I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays. I did...LOL So here's the update. Far now, I'm not going to paint the trim/door, or game room entrance until I finished painting. I like the idea of painting the trim and wall the same color. Thoughts? The ceilings are currently being painted Sherwin Williams Highly Reflective white. Any suggestions on a neutral paint color? (something to flow with this granite color below). I'm going to paint the main living area of the house including the kitchen the same color. I love the scroll work and the tear drops. If you don't like it, I can always use it in my entry :). I still haven't picked anything.

I think it's a keeper.

Not sure what other pieces you have that you feel it won't blend with - sure looks beautiful to me as a stand alone. Jan is right about contrast - you don't want everything the same and this piece is worthy of being different, I think.

With some light accents on top (some blue and white perhaps?) it will be lovely.

I wouldn't let the dark wood against a wood floor bother you since you can have a rug in front of it. The darker color makes the decorative wood work look more convincing and old, IMO.

It is a neat piece. You were looking at bombay chests with the big hips right? LOL! I like this one much better.

Oh good.. you all are making me feel so much better! I have had a few challenging days with our home construction, and furniture shopping helped!

I love it, and I think it looks SO much better in the darker tone than it would in the lighter one.

It's gorgeous! I can't wait to see it in your new place. As was already said above, with a nice mirror (or framed print) above it and a lamp on it, it'll really add presence to your foyer. Congrats!

Well, I am feeling so much better! I do love the piece too, and glad everyone else thinks it's not too dark, and better than the 'big hipped' bombe chests! I can't wait to move and start making our house a home... it's been a long 2 years my stuff has been in boxes!

Very nice! And I think it's better when the wood pieces blend and don't all match. It looks like a pretty neutral brown, I bet it will look gorgeous. Soon we'll all be suggesting what to put on it :-)

Beautiful Piece. I love it in the darker shade. I think the darker color makes it look richer.

Great - since the piece is a "no refund" floor model, I feel so reassured! I am SURE I will be back when I start decorating the top and surroundings!

I think it is gorgeous. It is always good to have something stand out and it will support itself in this way becuase of its orginality. It is going to be fine.

I don't know how it fits with your foyer, but the piece is beautiful! I like it dark and the finish seems more fitting to the piece than the lighter version.

I agree with everyone else. It is beautiful and the plank top adds so much character to it. Lighting does make a huge difference. I always find the lighting in stores to be so misleading--esp. when I was remodeling my kitchen, but at least then we could take a sample door home.

I like it so much better than a bombe chest. It looks like a unique piece anyway, not part of a "collection."
