Design Dilemma- update exterior colour scheme for curb appeal
Comments (11)If the goal is to upgrade the curb appeal, I would look to landscaping because your house colours are mostly working as is. That said, you're showing the Gentek samples which I'm assuming are for the soffit. The soffit doesn't actually show so I'm not sure why you're starting there. They help bounce light into your windows, so going with the lightest colour that goes with your lightest bricks (NOT white) would be a direction for the soffits. The door and siding are an entirely different matter. The brown that you have now on the siding goes perfectly with the darkest brown bricks. Just refresh it. The thing that looks out of place is the overly white vinyl windows and door. I'm guessing the windows can not be painted so that leaves the door . (If the windows could be painted, a beige colour that tied back into the brick would be the idea. ) The front door could/should be a different colour than the siding. The natural wood tone suggested by Freedomplace1 would work with your brick if you changed the door, but probably not as a paint colour. What were you thinking for the door?...See MoreISO of exterior remodel advice. Curb appeal, color scheme ideas etc
Comments (4)I like your new door. You have a range of colors you could paint it. Is your house all siding or brick? Are the window frames wood that could be painted? I would take down the shutters. Some of the windows are just wrong plus the shutters are so pale you can hardly see them....See MoreExterior paint scheme and curb-appeal questions
Comments (11)Great job on the renderings! If you really dislike the brick, then by all means, yes paint! It's about making it your house and what makes you happy. You will have some more maintenance with the painted brick, just fyi. A few additional options with both of this colors for you: A german smear would look great on the brick if you go with the shoji white If you do the urban bronze, maybe do a "wash" on the brick so you get the full texture of the brick, with the change in color. You can test it out and see how you like it before you paint, just some water to the paint is all it takes, but can give more details if needed. Add in more cedar accents. Maybe cedar on the gable over the 2 windows, either with shingles, or gable accents. If you do shutters, just make sure they are the right size for the window, so each one should be as tall as the window and half the size so if you were truly to use them and they were closed they covered the window. I think the idea of updating your posts or surrounding them with cedar post surrounds to make them a little more substantial would look great. A wood door and garage door would also make great accents. Large black light by the front door and on each side of the garage as well. Hope this helps....See MoreHelp with house color and adding some curb appeal to exterior of house
Comments (4)I dont think the concept of "curb appeal" applies here - is there an actual curb and why would anyone need to have a clear unobstructed view of the house from the street? City and suburb living is about community and connection with neighbors, so there youd want to present an exterior that is inviting, and connects with the neighborhood. But this is very much not that - this is retreat or summer house hideaway. So the "curb appeal" really is in the boardwalk, and the stairs, its very alluring, while the house itself remains semi-hidden. Or you can see lights of the house through the woods - that too can be very enticing. As you walk down the path - you get to the stairs and at top of stairs that's where youd want to present more of an inviting view of the house itself. Or whatever that space is underneath the deck - seems that could be some sort of outdoor living space. But we cant see those areas from the pic so then the question is what would we do with the portion we can see - the approach to the house. Some low voltage pathway lights along the board walk, just enough to illuminate the way, and look into native plantings for under the trees. There's an art to using native plants and creating a lush natural bird and wildlife habitat, but keeping it from becoming too wild or unkempt. I would talk to a lighting consultant re: how you can light the house to look most magical and summery I'm thinking more lantern like, sparkly effects. Certainly no yard lights or anything that shines beams of light up into the sky or sideways into people eyes as they are walking toward the house. Re: the wood, yes keep it wood tone! You could use 3 different stain colors for more visual interest - eg dark charcoal for vertical posts, lighter cedar tones for stair tread/board walk, etc....See MoreTKLS INC
