Lamp Shade Issues!

I ordered a pair of Lamps Plus lamp shades for my Asian style lamps. I had nothing to compare them to for sizing because the previous replacement shades were all wrong. After measuring over & over, I wasn’t happy with them after I got them. I think they are too big. Or perhaps, maybe if I swap out the one narrow end table (see last photo) then they’d look ok. I tried returning them but Lamps Plus wants me to destroy them to get a full refund. I just don’t want to trash perfectly good lamp shades. And I know I can’t resell around my area. Just looking for opinions to see if I need to trash or keep?

PS…kept the plastic wrap on them until I decide.

Your original tapered shade may work but you might want to try a smaller harp. the shade looks too short and a different harp may solve the problem. Worth a try.

I wouldn't say they're the wrong size so much as the wrong shape. That style of lamp should have a tapered shade. Those look out of proportion.

Well, I don't think they are horrible. but a bell shape would have been better. Are you able to find a llamp store that offers a variety of shade? Take your lamp with you and get it fitted.. It is sort of like buying a custom made suit. Be preparec for at least$100 for a nice shade and perhaps look at some pretty finials, too.

I have no advice about repairing the finish problem, but just wanted to ask how to tell if a lamp is Stiffel? I've seen some with a paper tag on the socket, but other than that, are they generally marked? Are there other ways to tell? I'm kind of kicking myself for passing up a really nice, really heavy/well made lamp at the thrift the other day. But if I come home with more lamps, DH might just put me out!

I took my antique capidomonte lamp to a lamp/shade store. The owner is an expert in that sort of thing. I was leaning towards a bigger shade, and she said you want the lamp to be the focus, not the shade. She helped me pick out a new finial as well. The old one is bakelite.

Such an easy fix. Take the roller shade down and tape a window seal foam strip on top of it. Tape it away from the inner edge. This will take care of the light on the top.

Yeah they need to be more tapered: bell, english drum, flared, something. But they are essentially the right height and the right diameter on the bottom.

Destroying them is a shame; they are fine. I do find though that the lamp/tables proportions are not working well.

They are not a perfect match thats for sure. Horrible? No. It really depends on how much you want to invest in these lamps. I would talk to Lamps Plus to allow you to donate them rather than trash them...and get new ones. Or just get new lamps! It may be cheaper and bring newness to your room. But thats of course entirely up to you depending on how attached you are to these lamps.

I had purchased these first. But they were too small. I think this is the style I need but in larger dimensions.

The shade should be twice as wide as the lamp base, and one third of the total height of the lamp. So for a 6-inch lamp base, the shade should be at least 12 inches wide. And if the total height of the lamp (including the bulb and harp) is 24 inches, the shade should be 8 inches tall.

^Yes, a shade more like that would be nice. Also agree with the suggestion of a finial, if possible.
