Question About Germinating Old Seeds

I found some pepper seeds dating to 2012 in a seed container, not refrigerated. I cant find these seeds listed anymore and would really like to germinate even a couple of plants. Can anyone tell me the best way to germinate/plant these seeds for the best chance of success? Thanks!

Between a couple of wet paper towels, kept moist in a dark place for a few days. If you choose to use those small peat pots I’d plant several seeds in each as your germination rate will be much lower than it was in 2012.

You’ll probably get about 30% if they were dried and stored properly. I’m not a fan of the paper towel method because it stresses the plant when moved. IMHO I would plant in a seedling mix and keep it moist and warm. Heat mat and a dome are ideal but even in front of a heat vent or top of the fridge is great. Best of luck

The main concern with "old seed" is viability. Once the seed has germinated the plant's genetics kick in and the production should be as good as "fresh seed". SeedSavers and other such places grow out their seed about every 10 years,at Svaalbard in Norway, the seed is intended to be stored for tens if not hundreds of years. But they have the ideal conditions to maintain viability. Steve

I normally don't soak my seed but with seed that has been in storage for a long time, I think it helps. Soak them in warm water for 24 hours before sowing. It seems to help with older seed.

I have not planted anything bug my begonia seed and pepper seed - BUT I like opening a fresh bag of germinating mix...the smell reminds me of life SPRINGing!!! I love the experience of starting with a tiny seed and from that seed feeding my family, neighbors, co-workers... and then canning and eating all winter long fresh sauce. I like starting with a tiny seed and from that tiny seed being able to share 100's of tiny seeds with people who could have the same experience I am.
