Living Room Furniture Design Dilemma

two focal points in the family room…need furniture and layout help

I would like to purchase furniture for my family room but I am struggling with what to purchase to suit the space. My challenge is the large fireplace on one wall, with a doorway opposite it, and the tv on the other wall. I have children and would like a cozy living room to flop in and watch tv. I like the idea of a couch with lounge (or maybe double?) with two chairs? . I'm not keen on blocking the large doorway. The house owners before us had a 3 seater couch with a walkway between the couch back and windows with two chairs flanking the tv and console. Any ideas are welcome. Thank you!

I like your current arrangement. For more seating, you can use two longer sofas in the same arrangement. Or a sofa with two chairs as you have it but without the ottomans. That leaves room for a backless bench type of seating to face into the conversation area that wouldn't interfere with the TV. With any options, your seating area is rectangular, so a rug would be fine to use. You may have room for a narrow console table behind the sofa facing the tv, if you place a sofa there.

You are well on your way. I really like option number two, the green floorplan. I would only add an extra end table on the other side of the couch directly facing the fireplace, turn the dining table so that it is perpendicular to the sliding doors (if there is room) and go with a island that is not curved. But that floor plan makes great use of the space. Opt for long horizontal floating shelves over a cabinet by your dining are as pictured in the other floor plans for a more contemporary/modern look if that is what you are going for.

The room is approximately 16x 20.5, with a 12 foot opening to the kitchen as shown in the photo. Windows are south facing. And the fireplace can be seen from the foyer entry. The furniture was all left to us from the previous owners. We are open to painting or replacing it, as well as painting the walls and carpet to brighten the space. Thank you again for any input!

I should add, the area behind the larger couch is a walkway of sorts. You can see our front door in one photo, and the archway leads to our master bedroom while the other direction heads towards the dining room and kitchen.

Hi. Lot's of potential here!

1) TV console is fine, as long as you like that style. Lower the tv. Center should be at about 48" from floor.

2) The arrangement previous owners had was perfect. Buy a 3 seater sofa and 2 swivel chairs, flanking the tv. The sofa should be pulled forward.

3) Large coffee table centered on the fireplace.

4) Grouping above fireplace is too small and dainty. I'd use art instead.

add art with a black frame and then move those plants in toward it to soften the space betwee the art and the windows.

Hi. I recommend tables and lamps. So you have to account for those.

Maybe you want a large arc lamp.....or maybe tables on either side of the sofa with table lamps.

Best way to do this is to create a floor plan and plan for the pieces of furniture with the correct measurements.
