Need help with redoing this living room

This living room is in a Colonial style farmhouse in Vermont. I feel like it could look amazing and would love some advice on how to give it a make-over. especially replacing some or all of the current furniture (a hodge-podge of furnishings from estate sales). Any tips on exactly what kind of furniture to get that would go with this style home?

The entire house is painted the same wall color so need to keep that but should I change the trim color to a white?

The green is not actually bad. It would work with proper color furniture.

WOW. Lucky YOU! Love the color of the walls AND of the woodwork. I would remove all your furniture and start to build from the floor up. A beautiful area rug. Don’t know your design style, but I would go full on Persian style rug. You can mix styles in your furniture. I would definitely do that. Not “Colonial” but eclectic. Simply styled track arm sofas upholstered in linen. Comfortable clean line chairs, even leather. Then…add some personality with fabrics, antiques, Tag Sale pieces. A collected look would suit your room. I envy you the bones of this space! Don’t just buy “stuff.” Collect, slowly, so that it looks like you have accumulated pieces over time…. GORGEOUS!

The room is quite charming but they selected furnishings from the 80s instead of simply going with classic style. Decide if you wish to keep the green. Select an area rug for inspiration and go from there.

The room can also be a bit more contemporary but still keeping it in a traditional style like you see below.

Beautiful inspiration room. I don't know about craft sand cement, but that is clearly faux coral in that picture. If you look closely you'll see the two pieces are identical. Have you considered buying those little boxes that are made to hang on the wall? You might get something in scale for the real coral you want to display and a little more modern like your inspiration. Here are a few at westelm and in the link below I found one at Target. Yes, walls will be painted and all wood trim will be painted SW Roman Column to match trim in the rest of the home. Paint being relatively inexpensive, I believed that would be picked near the end of the process. I did look at some sofas and chairs along with fabrics and liked this bird fabric to be used as pillows. The store has ordered samples of several fabrics for me to consider. My foyer, kitchen and family room are painted varied colors of gold/tan and depending on the colors we choose for the LR and DR those may be repainted. I do like the idea of using blue as I have been doing in other areas iof the home and I think it looks good with mahogany furniture. The above fabric has a couple shades of blue, a soft green, a bit of gold and deep grey/brown. My dining furniture is from 1952 and I believe I want to keep fabrics to and around that era and style although wouldn’t mind mixing things up a bit.

I'm going to be painting that this weekend too and have been looking for something just like what you shared! Please share the source of the photo (I need more photos of colors that go with stained trim) if there are more. I have this stained wood trim all throughout the house and I agonize over color choices because of it. If the trim were white, picking colors would feel less daunting.

Thank you all for the feedback! To answer some of your questions: no not all the furniture needs to stay in here this is our main entertaining room we do have a playroom downstairs, however this is our main play space so I do like to keep some toys up in this room we have a TV room in the basement that I was considering moving the big TV down there and keeping a smaller one upstairs Would there be concern on the couch and TV being too close if I move the TV to the window space? I also have a big vintage oak wardrobe that I could put on the wall where the TV is now to get rid of all the toy clutter. I don’t have dimensions on hand but can measure when we return home this evening. I am willing to part with all furniture and buy new if needed but I do like a homey, vintage style.

Leave the paint colors for now as they are spot on for the style of your antique.

Lucky you...the pine floors are fabulous.

This is my house. Or was, as we sold it. I mixed furniture styles, and used needlepoint rugs. Dining table is walnut (new); chandelier is Currey and Company, spider back chairs are new (from Design Center). You can mix and match, new and old, but stay with the traditional style.

What you don't see in this photo is my favorite piece...an antique Chinese wedding cabinet.

Every New England house needs a touch of the Orient. Blue deep water ships brought home so many Asian treasures.

I am a white trinm lover so that pic would be awesome but so much depends on whay you love about the space. I can see some white slipcovered sofas in there with the green but IMO the FP surround above the mantel is heavy looking so I would probably remove that but I am for sure a more modern style lover. Can you maybe tell us what your style is ? I do not think the interior of a home needs to be the same as the exterior but for sure I need to understand wht you like .The rendering above is very formal is that wht you like?

Patricia- We love all the woodwork, esp. the mantel, (so wouldn't want to replace that), the spaciousness of it, great lighting and the wide-plank floors. In Celery's rendition the white trimwork and lighter color furniture make it look amazing. We've painted the trim white in the rest of the house so it would match that beautifully.
