refinish historic pantry

Hi,

I would like to refinish my pantry but I'm not sure the best method to strip the finish. I'm also not sure what previous owners used on the wood. Any advice would be very appreciated. Thanks!

Have you started cleaning them at all yet? I don't mean regular daily, I mean a serious deep clean. A gentle cleaner, especially if there is any grease there, is a mix of vinegar or lemon juice and water. Add a couple drops of dish soap. Inside and out. There are chemical cleaners meant for wood that you can use if the grunge wear isn't coming off with gentle cleaner.

Then from there depends a bit on how far you want to strip before refinish. You can go anywhere from full blown sanding down and complete refinishing.... to using denatured alcohol as a basic cleaning strip before moving on with prep for a refinishing oil or other sealant.

For that lip. If there are spots that are actively chipping or likely to let loose, I would address that and remove those spots. If they are already age smoothed then it's up to you if you want to sand them out more or not.

What do the insides look like? The outside looks like it's in great shape. Nice looking grain, glad it wasn't painted.

@ worthy Thanks for your insights. We discussed the possibility of adding transoms above the bedroom doorways to bring more light into the hallway. The concern was the expense of adding more height to the second floor. A solar tube (not visible from the street) might be a cheaper option, although I always worry about roof leaks. I have mixed feelings regarding a basement laundry. I like the separation from the living spaces to minimize noise and potential water damage. However, I agree that bringing laundry up and down flights of stairs can be annoying (this is our current situation). At our next meeting with the architect we will reopen the discussion of laundry room placement with the options of: 1) keeping it in the basement; 2) moving the guest bedroom to the basement to make space for a laundry room on the second floor; and 3) using the suggestion of @MrsPete to install a dumbwaiter. Regarding the house footprint, we have tried to be as efficient as possible with the space available. With a narrow city lot (80') in the historic district (zoning requires two story) the house footprint is constrained. We also really enjoy the backyard for gardening and kids play and do not want the house to swallow the entire lot. Overall, I think we have achieved a good balance of a nice size home (3,000 sq. ft.) with most of the features we desire, that also blends into the existing historic neighborhood (the newest house on the block is 100+ years old).

Ri included the top one with the tile. I’m not sure what caused the darkening the wood but we didn’t have a rug in the hall. Snow could have melted there. The second one is in the shade. There isn’t as much of a color difference as what is shown. The third one was the only sunny patch that was left. Considering how filthy the floor is, it hides dirt and dog hair really well. We had to have engineered wood since we’re on the water. It was installed all over except for the front hall, laundry room and bathrooms. There is radiant heat under the first floor. Hope this helps.

You need a good finish carpenter. Such craftsmen are harder to find than the big box stores. Also check for lead paint which may be a challenge. There are ways to sand and smooth old drawers then rub runners with a candle, wax paper or soap bar to help them slide. There may be hardware pull outs or lazy susans that could help problem cabinets function better. A rope of led lights above cabinet and under cabinet lights would bright the area. A backsplash of tin ceiling or light beadboard would bounce the light more. There is paintable wall paper for both of those too. Beadboard plywood could also be a ceiling option. I would paint cabinets a creamy white or very pale green or buttercream yellow. then pick a midtone neutral counter top. Pulling up old vinyl and refinishing wood would be beautiful but time consuming. laying new vinyl right over the old could work well especially if the flood might be too uneven for ceramic tile. A small bakers rack and kitchen cart could add some storage and work space. Lots of possibilities but lots of work

I’m not sure if this is an option for you but you can save by ripping out yourself depending. Also if it was me in your position, I’m in Canada keep in mind, not sure where you are located and if you have this option but, a lot of people will do labour for fairly cheap, you could hire out the removal for cash. That being said it’s hard for me to tell you to rip it out knowing it’s historical, if it’s not salvageable I would recommend keeping some of the flooring boards to repurpose as furniture or something to add to the house. We ripped out a Brazilian cherry floor, the new owner owners didn’t like it, it was perfect condition and hadn’t even been refinished once. We kept majority of it. Also if your planning on spending the money go with solid, as you can get more longevity with sanding and staining over the years. Engineered can not be sanded even once, it’s good product as well but you can’t really beat solid hardwood. Carpet everywhere is an option but personally I think it makes a house looked dated and cheap, I’m always bias as I don’t install carpet. LVP is a good product but not in comparison to hardwood flooring. Lvp is superior to laminates not hardwood, it’s durable and water resistant, comes in many different looks and textures, is cheaper on the bank, cheaper to install. We have installed LVP in majority of the new builds going up in Calgary. I do NOT recommend going with vinyl for your house as the prep alone would cost almost as much as install by the sounds of it.

If the original finish is shellac, denatured alcohol will dissolve it. I'd recommend reapplying shellac as it's very DIY friendly. You can't screw it up; if you make a mistake, get out the denatured alcohol and begin again. Put a coat of paste wax over it and you've got a beautiful, hard, renewable finish.

I'd give josephs' approach a try. Use denatured alcohol on a small section or back of a door, see if it removes the top coat. Laquer thinner is another possibility. From there you'll need to use the back of the doors to experiment with a possible sanding schedule, dyes or gel stain that match that color, and a modern top coat. Once you've perfected the recipe, you can move on to the cabinet face.
