Does this look ok?

These two items have a lot of sentimental value (they belonged to my late father in law) to my husband. Having a hard time finding a place for them. I thought maybe together like this would be ok. Should the mirror be lower? What can I put on the cabinet to pull the two together? A brass bowl with decorations in it? It is in an upstairs hallway so not seen by guests but my husband can walk by it every day here. I’ve included a photo of the hall which also has a framed piece that belonged to my father in law as well. Do these work at all together? Walls will painted a warmer color soon and the doors are being replaced with solid wood doors. Untested in suggestions for the light, too!

I would probably drop the mirror a bit and put some kind of decorative object on the chest like a decorative box or bowl or something and that's it.

The mirror is a bit large for the chest, so the scale isn't perfect but that's not crucial.

Thanks. I didn't do a soil test. Is it too late to add amendments? It gets sun mostly in the morning and late afternoon. During the middle of the day there is some shade from surrounding trees. Those pictures were all taken early in the morning before the sun was up over the trees.

Well it gets sun from early in the morning till about sun down I'd say. I've thought of a really good way to winter protect it. first I'm going to cut off the leaves then get a hand towel and stuff that in a plastic contaniner and put it on the cadeux so it completly cover it to th bottom. Then I'm going to get a 5 gallon bucket and fill it up with about 4 gallons of woodchips and put that snugly over the plastic contanier. That way it will have to layres of prtection. Plus I'm going to have some of those things that come in shoe boxes that keep the moister out inside the plastic contanier so it will stay dry in it.

These Hansgrohe valves have to be suspended by the four ears on the back (tabs on green body) or via the adjustable (black) face plate. The system is great, the entire shower/tub line is covered by two (universal-ish) rough in boxes that have half the shower valve built in (supply and fixture connections, as well as the service stops). You can then chose from their line of trims (which includes the top half of the valve). I'm not connected with them, just think it's a clever system, when installed correctly. I hope the original poster was joking, when they asked if the sweating was "OK".

Is that a tv? Is that what you are asking about? If so, that choice seems a bit odd to me for what looks to be a dining area. is there another place for the tv to go? If you’re asking about the general decor above the sideboard, it seems a little busy. I’d defintely remove everything (provided you have other options for the tv) and try one large art piece that you love.

A runner is a good idea, I have no idea what to pick. This is the runner on our stairs (which will be replaced with something neutral)

Does this look better? I’ll try to lower the mirror/raise the cabinet. I gave them both a nice clean and condition w wood oil and they look much better in general.

If your going with a neutral rug on the steps, your options are pretty open for a runner in the hall

I would move the plant over to the right a smidge and add a small framed picture of your DH and his father.

Lower the mirror to 6-8 inches above the chest or raise the chest so the space between the two is the 6”-8” measure. Then add some color on the chest. A small lamp will look nice, too. I know you didn’t ask about this, but the pictures going up the stairs will look so much better without the written decal.

@Donna Cheek thanks! I appreciate any suggestions. We will be taking all of those down to paint soon (and taking the words down. Was not sure how I felt about putting them back up TBH). Not sure how to put the photos back up so they look better so I'm sure I'll post that project, too ha!

I like the mirror height, tho it's a bit high for the chest. I would look for some bun feet for the cabinet to raise it up a bit and make it look more like a decorative piece of furniture. How wonderful that you're trying to make this work, in deference to your husband and his sentimentality about the pieces.

I'm a little nervous about a potted plant being on an heirloom. It looks like the pot isn't porous, but temperature changes could lead to slight condensation. I would hate to have a ring there. I like the picture of your father-in-law there or other items of his. You did a great job cleaning up both the chest and mirror, and that's a great place for them both. Do lower the mirror.

I picked up a gold frame that looks a bit aged. But now I’m thinking it’s too matchy as the frame is the same shape as the mirror 🫣

Were you able to lower the mirror to four inches above the chest top? Can you take a photo from a lower position? Glad the plant is fake. :-)

A fake plant? It does not belong there. Even if it was real, it would still look odd on this lovely antique. It’s a dark, interior-room space where plants do not grow well - that’s why it looks out of place.

The little chest is beautiful, and I think new ”booster” bun feet would give it more presence as well as make it a bit more balanced with the big mirror.
