These leaves have always been very thin, never thick and waxy like my carnosa or rope/crinkle-whatever hoyas. They are stiff now, where before they were limp, is that what you mean? Maybe I should not have the bag closed tightly. I think that the problems with this plant started this winter when we left for over two weeks and it was cooler in here than usual. In a clay pot the poor thing dried out. I should have given it to a friend but she was afraid she would kill it! This window is south facing but shaded and only gets bright sun in the winter, the plant has always done well here, the carnosa below this one loves it there.

I feel like I have been productive this weekend. Not only in my own sewing room but also a wonderful quilty thing happened. My aunt has gone into assisted living. Prior to that she had gifted me half of her 60+ year old stash. Her son called me this past week and said that she wanted me to have the rest of her stash, scraps, notions etc. I went to get the items, only to realize that she had instructed him to give me a special quilt that was made the year that I was born (55 years ago). The quilt is an autograph quilt that contains autographs of many of the family and a few friends. The autographs were then embroidered. I was floored that she wanted me to have it instead of her son. As I was loading all the stuff into my car, Kenneth said, "I also have all these bags of quilts that need to go somewhere. Mom said that any that I did not keep were to come to you." Needless to say, I came home with 26 quilts. Age ranging from what looks like early 1900s to today. I wish I knew someone to date fabric and quilts. When I get time, I will take photos of them and post. I am just so amazed that she wants me to have these things. I plan to go see her this week and give her a great big hug. She and I have always had a special relationship.

It could be a lacecap form of macrophylla. Or it could be a serrata or mountain hydrangea, which used to be classified as a subspecies of mac. While I was researching the validity of not deadheading providing additional winter protection, I came across a couple of articles, primarily intended for wholesale growers, that indicated that they do cut back more heavily on plants destined for the retail trade. This tends to stimulate latent flower buds that may reside lower on the stems, resulting in a more compact plant (for easier transport and sales appeal), yet one that is also in full bloom....or close to it. But they also tend to have more specialized growing conditions as well, so how easy this is to achieve in a home garden is up for debate. OTOH, in mild climates with a long growing season, I have seen some cultivars of macs - and not necessarily new wood bloomers - that have been cut back hard yet still manage to flower quite well. So all is not necessarily lost :-)
