6ft front door? Help!

Hello! My husband and I are renovating our house and we're trying to enclose the breezeway between the house and our garage. Because of the load bearing beam on the front of the breezeway and not being able to raise it because the roof, and the fact that we would have to raise the floor, we would only be able to fit a six foot exterior door into the breezeway. We have the main entry door to the right of where the 6 ft door would be. I want to know if people think this would look weird or you would actually be able to tell? Once you get inside It would be regular ceiling heights. Would appreciate anyone's thoughts!

A 6-feet-tall door? It's a bad idea. Someone 6+ feet tall would notice because they'd risk banging their head. 10% of males in the US are taller than 6'.

selfridge74, I wish I could upload too as we are quite pleased with it all. But I pulled out my Bathroom file just now and it is actually called a 36 " not 32" shower. I guess the larger distance from corner to outer curve. It is MAAX Intuition Neo round 36" on this link. http://www.maax.com/en/products/shower-doors/corner/intuition-neoround The round ones are more fully rounded while these have a bit of a straight edge from each wall, then round out at the front only. It's a bit of a space saver. You can get plastic interior walls or just the floor and door and tile it, which we did. To the left of our shower we put our vanity with the back against same wall as shower and left side against the wall. There is a 6" gap between the right side of the vanity and the shower base, so its easy to clean in between them and doesn't look crowded. On the other side of the shower, (right angle, is our toilet on the short 5'5" wall. We got a Foremost Allery which had very good ratings, was one of the few round bowl designs so the bowl doesn't protrude quite as much, but elongated would still be OK. It is a skirted one piece that we quite like. Hard to explain it all but on the opposite wall of the vanity is the door. A regular 28" wide door and it swings into the bathroom. To the right of the door on the same wall that cut in 14" is a lovely little corner wall cabinet with rounded front. It fits in that little nook where the wall changes. It matches our vanity and gives us extra storage. They are made by a Canadian company in Quebec called Luxo Design. Our cabinet is still in their catalogue. It called Winter. The little corner unit that matched came from the Moonlight design, but was the same high gloss white and a perfect match. On the Winter cabinet we removed the sink that came with it as it didn't allow fitting against two walls. We put granite and a bowl sink on it. Lampert Dias Architects, Inc.We are in Texas and it gets really hot, up to 110 degrees in the Summer and Winter just lasted for about 2 months last year (~36 degrees) Personally, I really like full windows for a full clear view, thats why I chose fixed windows in the family room, while the breakfast bay window (on the right of pic) could be open for ventilation in the kitchen area. I'm not sure what brand, it was an option the builder suggested (either 3060 or 3070)...I'll be meeting the builder to finalize all the options this weekend, I can probably ask and see if they could also do the transom bigger and operable as you mentioned earlier I actually requested to bump the ceiling height in family room from 10 ft to 12 ft too so I can accommodate bigger windows and have some dimensions between the kitchen and family room...but it was quite expensive so we didnt go with that route.

A few thoughts. - This type of neighborhood is quite normal outside of the U.S. (6.5' or 2m apart is typical). I've many friends in The Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark and Germany that live in similar neighborhoods and they quite like it. They've an option of larger yards farther out but prefer the better location. More later... - You can call it builder profit or providing a better place at a lower cost for consumers. Land is expensive and land in a good or great location is even more expensive. Most people don't need and do not benefit from huge yards so this provides an option to get a nice house without all of the land expense. - If this neighborhood is located within walking/biking distance of good schools, grocery, pharmacy and places to eat then there is even greater cost savings in not having to drive as much ($0.58 - 1.98/mi in the U.S.) and which is also healthier. Many families in such neighborhoods determine that they only need one car (becoming extremely popular among millennials, Y's and some boomers) which saves even more money. - Houses 6' apart can actually get considerable light in through the windows on the narrow space side and it makes the interior massively better than townhome style construction with no side windows.

The cute little tree you're looking at in the picture, Maritimer, is someone's little toy that they've been dabbling with for a couple of years. They've taken what would be big tree and have been having fun pretending it is a bonsai. It would take a lot of attention to keep it being like that. But being that it is not in a container, eventually something will happen in this person's life that will cause them to neglect it for a couple of months, and they'll see that it is a Goliath desperately trying to escape from its confines. Because plants usually have more perseverance than people, on account of having nothing better to do and never sleeping, it will probably win. Placing this tree where it is, is predicated on an idea that is fantasy, not reality. I'm not trying to be harsh about this, but just truthful. For a centerpiece focal point plant like this, it would be better to pick a plant made from a shrub that has been turned into standard tree form. Even that could get out of hand if one picks something that is too large. There is an order to landscaping that insists hardscape comes before planting, since it is destructive to planting. If I were you, I'd forget about planting for a short bit and start a new thread getting some help with the walk design. When that's completely figured out, then start another thread getting help with planting design. You will be much more likely to avoid creating something that will turn around to bite you later.

I would not install a 6 foot door.

Can you tell me what the breezeway will be? I am seeing another door. What is that? Does there have to be a door in the breezeway area?

Not even doable because code mandates that exterior doors must be at least 76" in height.

We're trying to enclose it to become a mudroom. The breezeway goes into the kitchen. The door you see goes into the living room. The setup of this house is not great to say the least, and we're trying to maximize. Having a mudroom would be a game changer because right now you basically take off your shoes and jacket in front of the refrigerator. I hate the idea of a 6ft door too, hopefully we can figure something out!

Competely dysfunctional. Which is why it is againt code. If you want to make that habitable space, you are going to have to create a foundation, remove the roof, and then reframe it higher up, to achieve minimum ceiling height requirements. Plus full electrical and HVAC. You will then run into egress requirements if those windows are bedrooms.

Would it meet your local code to enclose the two open sides of the breezway with windows and then put the egress door on the gabled end of the garage (out of view in picture) or is that where the garage door opens? Hard to figure out if it's a rear entry garage or side entry garage since the picture doesn't show.

Just don’t have the mud room go all the way to the edge. You could keep a walkway between the garage the new mud room and have the door face the walkway. Or have an “indent” and put the door on the other side of the beam.

Thank you for confirming my thoughts everyone! :) We are not going to enclose the breezeway, the ceilings would also only be 7ft. Or we'd have to rip it down and re-build and that's not an option. We are going to reconfigure the space inside and move the entry door under the breezeway. Not perfect, but I also don't want a weird little mudroom that just doesn't work.
