Machine quilting a queen size quilt, help
Comments (4)I've done queen & king sized quilts on my regular sewing machine. It is definitely a task, with an exercise in patience and tenacity. A walking foot is a must, so you are there and ready. If you choose to go with the machine, you'll want to find an easy pattern. I suggest straight lines going in both directions to form a grid. This can be by following the intersections of your blocks, or just from corner to corner of your quilt, or straight line grids from side to side. One of my first I took blue painter's tape and placed it from the corner of the quilt to the opposing corner. Then stitched along one side of the tape. Then moved X number of inches over and did it again one until I reached the corner. I then worked from the first line out in the other direction. And repeated the entire process so the cross-hatch grid was created. There are many possibilities depending on your quilt. Can you post a picture for us to see? THen maybe we can help more. I'm the self-designated queen of making it work! I've done lots of large quilts on my standard machine. It is definitely possible, though it might wear you out!...See MoreChoo-choo train quilt--first attempt at freemotion quilting!

Comments (20)My Mama passed almost seven years ago, and I am still working on her fabric stash, but with materials used for quilting and also every other type of material one could need. I started quilting about a year before she died, and my first quilt was a Christmas gift for her, I finished in February. I kept company with her as I was quilting and she watched it come together, not knowing it was for her. She had always wanted to make a quilt, and had started the blocks for a Cathedral Windows, inspired by a friend when we lived in Missouri, as state just famous for it's cottage quilt industry. When one drove through the Ozarks, it was commonplace to see them hung out on clotheslines, to catch the eye of passers-by. She had also made some yo-yos but they disappeared sometime and I've never found them. I wish you much enjoyment with your new hobby. I think you'll find yourself close to her spirit as you work, as I find myself close to my mother when I am in my sewing room, handling the fabrics she had saved over the years. I have made about thirty quilts since then, really surprising myself since making ONE quilt was on my bucket list. LOL. Welcome to the forum, and my condolences as well on your mother's passing. BTW, that is one beautiful design you will be finishing. I also have a quilt cat who loves to lay on my blocks and scatter them too. He keeps me company each morning as I sew, and prefers my sewing room to all the others in this house....See MoreFirst machine: refurb. Pfaff v. new Janome?
Comments (3)My only advice would be to ask what did they refurbish on the Pfaff first, and what guarantees are offered on both machines - and will they give you classes on how both machines work? Check into Consumers Guide and see how the machines are rated, if you can - ask at the library for help to locate a recent article. How old is the Pfaff? Take another test drive on both machines before you do decide......walk away and give yourself a day to make your choice. That would be my advice without actually seeing and trying the machines for myself......another thought would be get a sewing buddy to come along and have a look as well - sometimes they see things you could have missed.
