My laundry is in a separate well thought out room of its own which I appreciate, but in between my office and my kitchen and many walk through it coming and going in this casual household.

If the appliances were deeply loved for their performance I'd be OK if not matched, but mine are matched and I try to keep things looking neat.

I'd ask how old your washer though. I left an almost vintage Maytag 606 in the laundry room of the house we sold 10 years ago. How I'd love to have that machine back and I've regretted staging the house to attract a young couple starting out. It added some water to both wash and rinse cycles, clothes were bright fresh and clean and all accomplished in no more than about a half hour.

Even quick wash on my new model is almost an hour, every other cycle more than that. I used to wait for the dryer, now its the washer.....clothes dry faster than they wash.

My SIL has that same vintage pair in her beach house, none of us mind doing the laundry when there - it's like a walk down memory lane.

If you're pleased with the way your washer cleans, I might wait to replace it. Especially if you are considering a mismatched set anyway - who would be the wiser in your basement.

More direct answer to your question - I'd be fine with a mismatched set in the setting you describe.

I was just going to say similar to morz. I have an older washer that I hope runs forever. It allows me to get scalding hot water, has a nice deep fill option, and the cycle is done in 45 minutes with nice clean clothes.

I‘ve had mismatched before - my only caveat is that they are the same color.

If what I wanted were different brands, I would get the same color and check to make sure the capacity is compatible (dryer needs to be a certain amount larger to fluff and dry efficiently). Not sure how I would feel about front loaders with different glass shapes in the doors (round and square), but if you have a square door washer, you have a huge machine and may need a matched pair just for capacity.

Oh yes-- I should have said they would be the same color. I am not sure but I think mismatched colors would bug me a lot... that said, one of the criteria for my search is "easy to read" which mostly comes down to white across the board.

Ally and Morz.. good points about older appliances but I don't think it's old enough to be in the range of "runs forever". I am thinking I'd appreciate an impeller vs agitator (seems like it would extend the life of frequently washed clothes) but an HOUR short rinse cycle? That's crazy. I guess I need to do deeper investigation.

I am pretty sure I will go with a top-load washer -- for one, I'd want to elevate a front-load washer and that would make for a pretty substantial height difference between the two. Also, the room is pretty small compared to laundries I've seen posted here (and not at all fancy). I think the top load would be most space efficient.

The wildcard is the hamper door -- it seems like the best configuration for my space but I want to see it/use it in person. If I don't like the hamper door, I could go with a matched set.

We have a mismatched washer and dryer. I never thought twice about this. They're in the laundry room, and I really don't care how it looks, but it actually looks fine, IMO.

A washer and dryer that are not from the same manufacturer wouldn't bother me, I don't think.

It wouldn’t bother me to have mismatched washer and dryer as long as the finishes were the same. I don’t have matched kitchen appliances but they are all the same finish, stainless steel. My washer and dryer match only because I sold the old ones with the old house.

I have friends with a beach house where I sometimes visit. They have a top load washer. I believe it is a Whirlpool. OMG. I only think my washer is slow. Theirs takes for.ev.er! And it doesn’t use enough water to get things clean. We use the ”deep water” setting for most everything. The washer is going almost all day every day when we are there. Not because we dirty up that many things, but because it takes so long for each load to run.

Our dryer died in the height of Covid and supply chain issues meant we had very little choice in its replacement. We couldn't have bought a matching washer if we wanted to (we didn’t want to as ours was still working well). So we bought a blue dryer that now sits beside our white washer. At the time I thought it would drive me crazy but I don't even notice it any more. Our laundry room is not in a public area of our house and I might feel differently if it was, but I doubt it.

Ours are not a matching set. Both are white. Washer died during Covid supply issues, but we are happy with the Electrolux. We have a Samsung dryer that keeps hanging in there.

Mine sort of match in that they are white and Whirlpool. However, they were purchased at different times. I am too much of a skinflint to get rid of a working appliance. I had a pink dryer and white washer for many years. They’re in the basement so who cares.

For the first time in my life, I did buy non-matching washer and dryer this last time, on purpose. I wanted a certain washing machine and I was not fussy about a dryer. I wanted my dryer to fit through the doorways and dry the laundry. I don't mind it all. Anyone who has ever seen them has not noticed. They are both white and the same height--which to me would matter somewhat as I use the tops of both machines as my folding area. If you end up with mis-matched, you probably won't notice it much, if at all shortly after installation.

I forgot to mention Funky that the matching dryer was priced significantly higher than I wanted to spend. So I looked at other brands that did fit in our space. Like I said, I'm not fussy with a dryer as long as it can fit through the house and does its job of drying. I thought I was unusual in this respect, but based on comments above, maybe not. Let us know how it works out for you!

In MY current house...a matched washer and dryer is part of the decor. In any other situation...a mis-match would be fine.

I would if I had to or if it was necessary for vastly superior washing or drying but I would absolutely hate looking at the mismatched pair.

Who would notice or care? Color =white for both but other than that...I can't imagine why anyone would care.

For my little aparment I just bought an LG from a kind sould who provided the link. They actually will be here in 45 minutes. My dryer works well, so I will hold off. I also think who cares if they are the same brand. If both washer and dryler get great reviews from the same brand then, yes. If one gets great reviews and the other doesn't I would not care. Mine are tucked away where I only see them. I would want the same color though.

Fingers crossed this delivery goes well. I can't wait to wash a large load of blankets!!
