replace Washer and Dryer or Just Dryer?

Hi all,

My dryer is broken and needs to be replaced. We originally bought a set 16 years ago and have replaced the dryer once already. Should I replace just the dryer again or replace the whole pair? The washer works fine.

Assuming you don't have your W/D setup in your living room, where style would be critical...

If it isn't broke, don't fix it.

Aside from saving money, and using that money for something else (or a nicer washer later when your washer does break)...

You're gambling that a new washer will last longer / perform better than your current washer, and that is an absolute gamble.

Wondering why you've replaced your dryer twice in 16 years against one washer, considering that dryers typically have double the service life as washers.

I'm a Realtor with a bathroom that houses a washer and dryer. On a personal level I HATE IT! Its in our main/guest bathroom on the second floor and its often "occupied" when I need to get in there to do laundry. It's so annoying that we're planning to change the space by adding a new wall & new door so the bathroom has a separate entry. My thought would be to create a nice linen area or build in a secondary closet in the bathroom instead and leave the W/D where it is. On a professional level I've found it to be a real hit and miss with buyers. It can depend greatly on the size of the property and where else in the house the laundry could be. If it's a small home and the only other spot is the basement, garage or not at all, having it in the bathroom is a plus. However if the house already had a dedicated space for the laundry with easy access, the reaction is often not so great. In our situation, there was a dedicated laundry room by the kitchen on the main level. When the W/D were moved upstairs, the laundry room was converted into a walk in pantry. I love having the W/D upstairs as well as a walk in pantry, both were positive changes however I don't feel like the original homeowner took the remodel far enough. Instead of creating a space for them and making it look like that was where the machines went originally they just dumped then in a corner of the room and the job looks unfinished. This bathroom was originally a small 4th bedroom. By the time we finish with the update, the laundry will be in its own little "nook" (formally a bedroom closet) in a hallway and the bathroom will be it's own separate space.

Well, the saga continues. To make a very long story short the Affinity washer and dryer was too deep for my space. I did get a guarantee that I could return it without penalty if it did not fit. The "expert installation service" we were told about really was an in-house delivery service - nothing more. The guys put the washer in the spot and said "look see - it just fits - isn't that great". We were focused on the dryer which looked pretty hopeless so we didn't even take delivery on it. After the guys left DH took a yardstick and put it from the "pony wall" across the front of the washer where the bubble door was and only then could you tell that the bubble door actually stuck out beyond the wall. It was an optical illusion that it fit because the part of the washer adjacent to the wall fit but the middle part of the washer stuck out beyond that. Anyway, they came and picked it up on Saturday and promised us a full refund. Not sure that the paperwork has been processed - yet but I am hopeful. As you know we are looking for the largest capacity we can get with the smallest depth. Now we have been recommended the following:- and I would love feedback: Washer: Bosch Axxis WAS24460UC 3.4 CU capacity only .1 smaller than the Affinity. Dryer: Axxis WTV76100US - 3.9 CU - This dryer is quite a bit smaller than the Affinity - I am concerned that this dryer can work as well on drying the same capacity coming out of a 3.4 CU washer?? I wash alot of blankets and quilts (queen size) and it is important to me to be able to wash and dry these. I am going to see these models in the store and will bring my puffiest queen size quilt to see how it fits. Would love any feedback.... Back to square one - but I'm hoping this one will do the trick....

Well, you bought the machine that has the best warranty in the industry and is built like a tank. With care, you'll get 20 years out of this set. The slower, longer stroke is much easier on your clothes that Kenmore or Whirlpool machines are. What happened to your old Maytag set? Did you consider repairing them? Maytags from 19 years ago were still considered great machines.

A stackable pair ... meaning a frontload washer with a dryer set on top that can also be separated and run in side-by-side orientation? Or a stacked pair, meaning a unitary machine that can comprise either a frontload or a topload washer, with dryer at the top, and can't be run separated? Model number(s) of the machine would clarify your situation.

JoeNY7 - Those were my thoughts, too. Thanks for confirming! I'm only worried that the washer will die shortly after buying the dryer and then I won't have taken advantage of the price break in buying a pair.

Dadoes - I don't know - I am wondering the same thing! Could I be doing something wrong? I usually do all my laundry in one day (for a family of 5). Does this wear out the dryer more quickly?

We are replacing a 38 yr old dryer (that is still working)and at the same time replacing a 15 yr old washer. Maybe the washer would have many more years but updated size and hopefully performance. We ordered a front loader washer and the matching dryer after only having the traditional agitator type washer. These will be in the basement and we didn't care if they matched. Both should be more energy effiecient.

Regarding the frequent dryer replacements. Are you cleaning the vent run periodically? And are you cleaning the dryer vent beyond the screen that comes out. I vacuum as much as I can in the area were the screen is held, using a very long flexible crevice tool. I have recently purchased an auger/brush like tool that hooks up to a drill with 12 feet of extension. I hope it works to clean out my vent run so I don't have to unhook the thing like we do now.
