I have five cats, so I go through a lot of cat litter. I began getting the 28 pound buckets when I realized the uses they had. (There's no way I can lift a 40 pound bucket.) Two of them are now housing tomatoes, and one is home to a bell pepper. What I'd love to do is turn them into self-watering containers, but the reservoir thingies I see for sale are for round pots, not for square ones. I have a massively huge tomato plant in a self-watering "square foot success kit" that I got from Gardener's Supply. Be nice to make a homemade one.

Mommabird . . . My late Smudge had the same attitude as yours did! I bought a thing at the pet store -- it was a clear plastic insert for the toilet and directions. The liner went between the seat and the porcelain, and you put some kitty litter in it at first. Theoretically the cat accepted that as his place to go. He was supposed to want to balance on the seat because the insert wasn't stable. Gradually you removed the litter and eventually removed the liner. Yeah, right. I was the laughing stock of my household and the whole experience just reinforced my DH's opinion that all cats are stupid. Oh, well, it gave us all a good laugh.

I read the same thing several years ago about clumping litters so I switched to a combination of KatGo(saw dust)and Yesterday's News(recycled paper pellets). After my cats passed away, last summer I adopted Odessa from the ASPCA. They used Feline Pine and suggested I do likewise. It is terrific! IMHO, the cat litter eqivilant to indoor plumbing! It lasts a long time. We flush the poops immediately but dispose the old litter and rinse the the box every 9 days or so. It absorbs odor and moisture better than other litters and is much more cost effective. I know there is a wheat based litter, but I would worry about bugs that can infest grains. Be sure to follow the directions! Its very important not to over fill the box with pellets. Feline Pine is well worth going out of your way for if you can't get it at a general retailer. I looked further at the Tidy Breeze system last night and watched two you tubes on it. I'm still not convinced though I found the complete system on Amazon in frustration free packaging for a bit over 31 with free shipping. It included everything. I would really like to get something that wouldn't track through the house. I think the Breeze system would eliminate the tracking but the one video the lady said she could smell the cat urine that was on the pellets. I would think if you removed the ones that got wet you could eliminate that smell but I'm not sure. For $31 I am thinking it may be a go. I can at least try it to see if it works.
