I read the same thing several years ago about clumping litters so I switched to a combination of KatGo(saw dust)and Yesterday's News(recycled paper pellets).

After my cats passed away, last summer I adopted Odessa from the ASPCA. They used Feline Pine and suggested I do likewise. It is terrific! IMHO, the cat litter eqivilant to indoor plumbing! It lasts a long time. We flush the poops immediately but dispose the old litter and rinse the the box every 9 days or so. It absorbs odor and moisture better than other litters and is much more cost effective.

I know there is a wheat based litter, but I would worry about bugs that can infest grains.

Be sure to follow the directions! Its very important not to over fill the box with pellets.

Feline Pine is well worth going out of your way for if you can't get it at a general retailer. I've become a big fan.

I got the feline pine LF and LOVE it! You are so right that it handles the odors better and our lanai (patio) is river rock so the pellets don't sink into the stone but rather just sit on top if they do track out at all. Nice! I was worried about how the cats would take to it because it was so different and they're 14 y/o but they didn't mind at all. We'll see how their upper respitory issues go now. HOpefully this will be the key to keeping them healthier in their old age - or as the vet says "ancient"...LOL

I just wanted to warn you away from "Swheat Scoop". The above post from Ifnyc was right, and I had direct experience - I had used Swheat Scoop for a couple of years with no problem, until one bag came infested with wheat bugs. I didnt' realize it till too late. Of course, I threw away the bag, the litter, and even the litter box. But now it's nearly two years later, and I STILL occasionally see a wheat bug. Once you have them in the house, it's hard to get rid of them. Luckily, the litter box was far from the kitchen, or else the bugs would have migrated there, and I really would have had a problem.

I like a litter called World's Best Litter, which is, however, also a grain product, if corn can be considered a grain (?). I think corn is less likely to have bugs in it, and I really like the texture, the lack of odor, and the dust-free aspect.

We also use World's Best Litter (yes, corn is a grain). We've gone through MANY bags, and haven't had a bug yet.

Ilove Feling Fresh which is a pine clumping litter. The cats love it too no smell and it lasts long.
