May 2022 in my hosta garden
Comments (40)Debra, thank you for the thoughtful comments. Your sun perennials should do well and provide a fun change in focus. I have always been hesitant to do the ammonia drench because I have burned plants with Miracle gro hose sprayer in the past. Dilution is important, but so it the sunlight level, humidity, and heat, IMHO. Generally, my good intentions do more harm than good. I picked and squished slugs today. The voles are continuing their onslaught on the hostas and liriope, breaching the liriope border completely in multiple areas important for water-flow control. I must regroup with DH and plan our counter-attack. Today, Stained Glass fell over and is in rehab due to voles. Last week, Ani Machi fell and may not recover. I cleared some excess leaves and mulch today so the voles have less cover. On the bright side, lots of plants are doing great. There are so many flower buds everywhere, hosta, lily, and more. Grapes and kiwiberries are growing well. I even started some tomato seeds after a 5 year hiatus....See MoreHosta H 2022 ..................
Comments (32)I confess, I too, had to read the joke about the slippers and coffee again to get the joke! Good one! Gary, never heard of Hunter's Ridge. It's quite impressive. I like the way the leaves kind of fold over each other and the nice shape it makes. Beth, your Hudson Bay is wonderful! Sherry, lovely Halcyon. I don't have one yet. I saw it in a big box store, but heard that purchasing that particular one had a good chance of it being virused. But I will find one some day! Hosta_maker, I am drawn to Heavenly Cloud and High Five! Peren.all, as always, your Hanky Panky is just beautiful. Great to see two "different" pictures too. Nicholsworth, great picture of the grouping of different hosta! Old_dirt, don't know what you are talking about when you said "I have several H's but none very impressive." Yes they are impressive! Shadow, good luck with the Hudson Bay. One day it just may surprise you! Lovely Halcyon! Lindalana, High Voltage looks very pretty! Debra, interesting that Lindalana has the only yellow "H!" Love the two different shots of Halcyon. I didn't realize that it comes up green and then turns blue....See MoreHosta I 2022......................
Comments (23)I hate playing catch-up. That Iris Frazier is going on my list, slow or no. I have 5 I's but only took picks of Inniswood so you get 2 I's from me. Inniswood at the bottom in June (the month not the Hosta). And later in the year. Plus, Inniswood Gardens is right around the corner from me. I should get a pic of theirs this year....See MoreHosta R 2022 ...................
Comments (33)mbug, love your dog and puppy statue in the garden…..Ripple Effect got my attention when it was on the cover of one of the hosta publications in the last year……yours is very nice. Does it get much sun?? Also, I don’t know your zone, am wondering if it’s 5 or 5b like me. All of your hostas look perfect! No burns, frost damage or even munchies damage…. How do you do it? One more thing, I see you have hostas in pots…..how do you overwinter them? Old_dirt, your hostas are beautiful as well! All your medio-variegated ones look terrific! I always thought those were a bit more picky about their conditions. Do you think they are? Also, Royal Standard has a pure white flower whereas Honeybells is more lavender. To me, the foliage looks like RS. Your Regal Splendor is lovely! debra...See Moredjacob Z6a SE WI
