Comments (15)Heavenly Pink Fang looks quite different in each of the three photos here. But I like the way it looks in all of your gardens. Nan - I always like your photos of Hey Soul Sister. I had Heavenly Lovers Lane on my short wish list. Your photo looks so much different in color than Gossard's. What color would you say it really is? Do you think it would be a good one to cross with UF's? Maryl - What a pretty picture of Honky Tonk Barbie! When I first received mine it had hardly any root system. It did better in the second year, and I'm hoping it will be full recovered this next season. Mine has yet to rebloom, although I know you said it reliably reblooms for you. Holly Dancer looks like that most of the time. It hasn't bloomed for a couple of years because of grub damage. It is a sunfast red. Steve and Sherry - High Water Mark is a good performer for me. Sherry mentioned it being pink, but it's registered as lilac, and I would call it lavender. David - I'm always drawn the patterns on Handwriting on the Wall and have considered adding it many times. But I always stop when I see the height is only 24 inches. How does it perform for you, and have you done any hybridizing with it? Debra...See MoreWhat not to do with hostas 2022 ...
Comments (24)deb most hosta buyers don't and won't do the research. i get that, as a hybridizer i spend alot of time picking apart lineage and genetic plusses and minuses. don rawson has done us all a big favor by making the hosta lists, so under sun tolerant you can find pauls glory, orange marmalade etc. http://www.hostalists.org/hosta_list_sth.php if you go to the library and look up forbidden fruit you can click on hugo phillips data, another great service. https://www.myhostas.be/db/view/Forbidden+Fruit there you can see forbidden fruit is a sport of orange marmalade. down a little further is ploidy, you can see 4-4-4, 4 stands for tetraploid in that layer of the hosta. ...a diploid will be 2-2-2 like i said, most people don't want to get that far into it. some of us hosta heads have alot of time on our hands in winter....See MoreHosta Companion 2022 .............
Comments (40)Yes Laurie, that is Bartzella. I found one on sale in the fall. I couldn't grow Peony in So. Cal. so when I moved to Ohio, it was near the top of the list of things to plant. Over a dozen Peonies later and I may be out of room. Although, when I find one on sale, I can't resist it and I managed to wedge two more into my garden last year (Casper and Cora Louise). Although I'd be better served being more selective. I've been thinking about removing the first one I planted - Dr. Alexander Fleming. This pic shows my first tree Peony (Houki) and JM Geisha Gone Crazy. I also found a Mountain Laurel (Kalmia) last year on sale which promptly went into a Hosta bed and even managed to bloom for me. and these Dodecatheon manage to survive under my large Maple trees. I've bought from Mr. Maple before. Strange packing for 2 trees. Maplestone had better packing the one year I couldn't find time to drive there. I have trouble keeping Heuchera alive, so I consider them multi-annuals. I also lost a Fire Alarm after only one year. I think it's a finicky one. I've had much better luck with Carnival Watermelon, so I've gotten a couple more of those. I've bought around 30 different ones, and I couldn't tell you how many I've lost, but they stick around long enough to keep me happy. Lucky for me there's a place here that sells 4" pots for ~$4. Electric Plum and Carnival Rose Granita I loved Sweet Princess while she was here. Silver Scrolls (shown in my previous post) is a survivor. And Caramel and Blondie have been with me for 5 years now. (In their 1st year)...See MoreHosta Blues 2022 ....................................
Comments (23)old_dirt really nice Hadspen Blue! Debra they are all beautiful but Prairie Sky is a standout along with Blueberry Muffins and Blue Hawaii! I went back over all my pics of Silver Bay. It gets sun all day except around 1:30 - 2:30. My soil is moisture retentive and I am on the edge of zone 4b so those are things to keep in mind with placement. jocl17 very nice DBS. Ann just lovely. Diamond Lake is a beauty. I think I would rule out Blue Cadet as your NOID. Might lean toward Fragrant Blue. If you could give close up pics of foliage & flowers as well as size it would help decide the ID....See Moregaryz6ohio
