Design Dilemma Organizing the Home Home Disasters

Help! Terrible master closet

Any ideas/suggestions on how to reconfigure this with shelving etc? I am not sure that I can take the center out as I believe there is something in there (hvac maybe?)

The issue I have is on the right rack, its difficult to hang things from the top because as soon as I do, I cant get to the clothing thats hung on the left/right..and then its in your face as your trying to reach in (5’1 here!)

The top shelf is so high up that I can only store out of season items. The bifolds are also terrible because the doorway is already tight as is, then the folded door is in the way since its stacked up.

Any suggestions appreciated

Remove all the shelves. Sort your hanging clothes by length - long dresses, tops, slacks and then figure out how much space you need for each length. Reinstall the shelves. Put seldom used, seasonal or extra stuff on the high shelf, and have a stepstool tucked into the closet so I can get to the high up stuff easily.

Would you have room to turn clothes rods 90°, hanging in the deep part of the closet? I would put double rods in one closet, and a longer one for dresses in the other. Opposite the hanging clothes you can build 12" shelves (I would not use wire shelving). Essentially you would have 2 shallow walk-in closets.

You could try turning your shower 90 degrees and putting it on the top of your bath, flipping the closet and accessing it from the dresser location, turning the powder room 90 degrees, and having the mudroom connect to that hall. you may have space for a small closet in the mudroom or in the hall. your end up with a smaller master closet though.

White. It is timeless. I don't have white interiors in my kitchen or bathroom cabinets but I opted for white for my custom closets. Even in the most fabulous beautifully designed ultra-expensive homes, the closets are white.

Honestly, I look at the layout I drew yesterday. The cabinet is nice for extra storage but I should have kept some of that space for more counter. With a 24" vanity, guests can pretty much just put a tooth brush and toothpaste. Where at the other stuff go: On the toilet seat? On the floor? some little shelves above the toilet would help (but personally I don't like that (I am always afraid that will drop (either in the toilet or on the floor very close to the toilet). Again this is your MIL house, she certainly can have any size of the bathroom she wants but 7'0" is the minimum required to be to code. She could check with her contractor.

I'd also consider taking the doors off and replacing with curtains, especially if you rarely close the doors.

Remove the doors and try it for a month. If it's good, then install a single door on each closet. If it is not good, call a contractor for an estimate on reframing the closets with larger (wider and taller- floor to ceiling) openings. They can also investigate the possible HVAC in the middle. A full opening with sliding doors would be much better than the current structure.
