We leave tonight for my DD’s wedding in The Maldives. First stop, 2 days in Bombay. DD and fiance meet us there and then we continue onward.

I have never done such long flight. I have never been so meticulous about measuring all my bags.

We have two carry-on bags but one is filled with all of the five wedding dresses. DH and I shared the other.

I tried to pack a variety items should our check-in bags gets lost delayed. ( DH put in air tags)

For our check-in bags I comingled our clothing so that is so that if one gets lost we each have enough.

Hopefully will sleep tonight.

Any tips on once we get our island, please share.

How exciting!! You've certainly planned for all the possibilities related to your luggage. Take care of yourselves too - be sure to get up and walk around on the long flights and drink plenty of water to prevent DVT and pulmonary embolism. Not to be Debbie Downer but DH's 60 year old cousin-in-law died last year from this very thing.

Kats, that is some real chutzpah. I feel for you. We've been in our home for a little more than a month after a 13-month build (that was only supposed to take 9 months) - the delays were excruciating because they would have been avoidable by someone with even a modicum or organizational ability, which our GC does not have. He's a lovely guy on a personal level but not nearly as good a contractor as he thinks, and we sorely need a break from the unrelenting pressure. He still has not finished one major item - two sets of steel stairs that go from our rear porches to our rear terrace, as well as several small punchlist items. There's always an excuse. He's disorganized, but resents it when we step in to organize, or take any kind of action to impose a deadline - this from a guy who is routinely hours late to scheduled meetings and never met any deadline in the construction process, even ones he imposed himself. Our new theory this week is to give him whatever time he needs (within reason) but to limit his intrusions into our home life to one day a week, arranged in advance, with a "one hour" rule - if he's not here within an hour of when he is supposed to be he has to wait until the next week. Apparently that is being just as "mean" and "difficult" as complaining about unmet deadlines - he thinks we should be there 24/7 for him to do what he wants, or we should just give him a key and trust him, in any event on his schedule. No way - he has needed watching every step of the way. We've done way more than our share of work that he should have done - I feel for you there too. He's been inches away from being fired more than once on this job, and we've talked to a construction lawyer several times about really contentious issues. In the end, even though we have the cash leverage (we still owe him more than our 10% retention, primarily because he's too lazy to do a requisition), it just hasn't been worth it to fire him. Assuming that you don't need clean title for a takeout of your construction loan, it sounds like you have little to worry about. I don't have huge faith in the court system, but even then I find it hard to believe that a judge would buy his argument that his subs are not under his control. Also, if he's not done, how in the world could he be owed a completion bonus? The courts are always a risk, but in this case it seems to me a pretty small one. If you do have to close any new financing that requires title work, you may need to think about it a bit more strategically. Do everything you can to get your loan closed without a lien being recorded. Otherwise, my advice to you is the advice I have a hard time taking myself. It's only as big a deal as you make it. So hire a lawyer and instruct him or her to deal with it in as cost-effective a manner as possible. Then let it go and enjoy your new house.

Make sure that you have a way to upkeep the power to your camera and other devices. The residential electrical power varies greatly in the places you mentioned. except for the USA, most of those places uses 50 hz, the US is 60hz. You will need a charger that is compatible with the power source of the country you are in, or use disposable batteries. The voltage of most disposable cells in the US is nominally 1.5 volts. However, many newer camera use Lithium-ion batteries that have a much higher voltage. I don't know if there are disposable cells made in these higher voltages. In this case, one alternative is to carry multiple sets of charged up rechargeable cells, and re-charge any time you get the opportunity. It would be a shame to be at a world heritage site with a dead camera. Naturally, when you are on the cruise ship, that power source will be constant, but do check to see what it is. Do not assume it is the same as state-side power. So click the camera all day and recharge when you return to the ship. When you leave the ship for a day, go with several sets of freshly charged batteries. Below is data from a 1967 booklet. Chinese provinces were not listed because travel restrictions were in place at that time. I've had two but not at the same time. The first was from Germany and worked out good. She was a real part of the family and we continue to keep in touch with her. She was here in 2001 at the same time as the terror attacks. I know that was a very scary time for her family in Germany. The other was from Brazil and was here in 2005. She was a nightmare and ended up going to live in another state. This was her goal all along. I found that most are from fairly wealthy homes which is why they can afford to come here in the first place. With the German girl, she told me that it cost her parents $18,000 alone for the program costs. She said that this covered her program in Germany (the one she pays to come here) and the program costs for the U.S. It also covered her airfare and her week long introduction course in New York. It did not cover her spending money. Her parents gave her $400 per month. We did not receive any money, but we knew we wouldn't. Also, we read thru many bios and picked the ones we thought would be a fit for our family. The info provided to us had written recommendations from their teachers, parents etc. We did have to do a little bio about our family but I will say that the one from Germany told me that if she would not have accepted us as her American family, then she would not have received another chance, in all likelihood. I wouldn't tell you not to do this because there are great experiences out there. I will say though that if something doesn't seem right, do not hesitate to get the kids out of your home. Thank you all for your comments. (I was able to see them today on my blackberry while working on the house but couldn't take the time to figure out how to post.) We have decided to put out the For Sale sign this weekend and advertise an Open House for next weekend. Hopefully, any interested buyers will come back. It was stressing us out too much to try and have it ready for viewing tomorrow. (For example, it needs cleaning, we don't have light fixtures, the doors need knobs...) We focussed on the exterior today and got everything looking nice. We are going to advertise a private sale for a couple of weeks just because there's not much for sale in our neighbourhood which is a "desirable" part of town. We'll see if anything happens quickly, if not, we have a realtor waiting in the wings. Thanks again for your assistance. Wish us luck!

Oh my goodness, this is so exciting. DH and I are not incredibly big travellers and this sounds so exotic to me. Have a fabulous time.

Do you want compression socks for the flight? Since I broke my foot I have been wearing them when I have a busy day planned and they help quite a bit to reduce swelling.

Your packing sounds as if you have thought through every detail. Just keep an eye on those carryon bags, although they should be safe in an airport. my one friend had her bag snatched in a train station in London. They had been to a wedding there and all her good jewelry was in the stolen bag. Someone simply ran by and grabbed it and disappeared into the crowd.

Yes, hydrate and move around. Mostly enjoy yourself and dont worry! You’ve planned ahead as much as possible. I cant wait to hear about the wedding and see the pictures.

If you need some type of enhancer in your water to make it more palatable, have it accessible. I know some people don't like plain water. I dislike water on planes ( tastes stale to me) so I buy the largest bottled water available once past security and stop at a Starbucks or something to get a large thermos container filled with ice. If my water is icy cold I will sip continuously through a flight.

Summer, a little background. DD’s fiance was born in Bombay. But he is American (Irisj/Jewish!) His dad did import export in India and the children grew up going to India.

DD now has a factory in Jaipur for her business.

They have been to The Maldives quite a few times and it is a special place for them.

The wedding will be from March 11-14 with the ceremony on 13. The number 13 plays a part their story so they chose that date.

The ceremony will take place on a sandbar at sunset. We will all be transported over there by speedboat.

They planned all of this themselves. Every now and again I’d get text to weigh in on a decision, but for the most part, they are handling every detail.

The biggest surprise will be the groom’s attire. DD is in charge of having something made by a tailor there. They are using antique silk fabric that his Dad once brought back from India. This is will be one way the dad can be part of the wedding day.

The dad passed last August. Yesterday they had a ceremony in the town he frequented to distribute his ashes.

Excellent call on the air tags. They provide me with great peace of mind knowing my bags are on our plane. Of course, if they weren't I suppose it would cause more stress during the flight. So far, they've always made it on the plane. Ugh, hope I didn't just jinx myself. We head out again on Wednesday, although certainly not anywhere as magical as the Maldives.

The Maldives and Fiji are top of my bucket list. I just don't know if I can handle a flight that long. I hate to fly. I do it because I love nothing more than a tropical beach, but I hate every minute of it.

Looking forward to pics to live vicariously through you. And would love to know how you handled the long flight..
