I didn't realize that spider mites would attack the TOP only of the leaves? Katkin - They've been at this for a month or more. I don't remember what they looked like the last couple years when the leaves got ready to drop. The other plumie (in a different area) is blooming its plumie heart out! Weird stuff this is. Like Karen said, new cutting no fertilizer until leaves are at least 6" long which is at least a month and often several. Water once with superthrive and or B-1 and water if you have it or soak the cutting overnight in this solution and then dip in rooting powder and plant about 3" deep.Water with the remaining solution. Use cut pieces of styrofoam between the pot walls on opposite sides of the cutting to the cutting to hold in place as the new roots are very easy to break off by bumping, wind, or sometimes just the weight of the cutting. Put on hot concrete and go to Siberia (in other words leave it alone.) Karen can tell you this as when she first started she was the big mother hen- poking, re-potting, messing- she finally learned to be patient and now she has a yard filled with happy plants. Trust me- less is more. Bill

What zone are you in? If your in a cooler USDA zone it could be that it's just going dormant. How often are you watering? Are you fertilizing at al It could be that the leaves are burnt from too much fertilizer. Hope that this helps. I know other growers will be here to help you. That appears to be thrip or mite damage. The plants should recover from it rather quickly. It sounds like you figured it out on your own but just didn't know the best approach to get rid of the crawling "brown thingies." Look for a Neem oil or a 3 in 1 type product to treat all surfaces of the plant including undersides of leaves. edit: forgot to add... this time of year you should expect leaves to yellow and fall off as the plant prepares for a dormancy period. Generally speaking the oldest leaves (or sometimes the most damaged leaves) yellow first.
