Help with basement layout
I would love some help with the layout of the basement. The ping pong table has to stay where it is, it won’t fit anywhere else. Given that, how can we best utilize the space? i have 2 small kids and my husband really likes to play ping pong. I’d like space for kids to play and get energy out. All furniture except the ping pong table Can be changed/moved. Thanks!

Comments (0)Hi everyone, Looking to finish our basement and looking for some help with the layout. Ultimately looking to finish the bathroom (roughed in when the house was built), add a media room, perhaps a small bar, and an area for the kids. I would love to get your opinions on which option we should take for finishing the bathroom and moving the mechanicals, and then how we should finish the blank canvas space. On the images, each square represents 6 inches (36 square inches). Here is the current layout: Option 1: Leave the furnace where it is, move the hot water tank and softener to open up a space for a door to the bathroom (off of what would probably be a good area for the media room). Downside is it cuts off the space a little bit compared to the next option, makes the workshop/storage area a bit unnecessarily large, and requires getting rid of the shower drain (which the utility sink is currently using). Plus is it doesn't require moving the furnace (approx. $1,200). Option 2: Move the furnace, hot water tank, and water softener. Opens up the space a bit more than option 1. Like option 1, requires the shower drain to be covered over. Option 3: Leave furnace where it is, wall it off, move the HWT and softener, and change the entrance location to allow for the installation of a shower. Makes the space a bit more awkward, and cuts down the usable space of the workshop/storage area. Doesn't requires moving the furnace so saves a bit of money on that expense. So, any opinions on which option I should take as well as how we should design (mock-ups are welcome!) the open spaces would be VERY much appreciated! Comments (0)Hello, My wife and I have been struggling with how to lay out our basement. I think we're set on where the theater and exercise room will be, but we've looked at different options for where to put the bar and ping pong table. We will have a side walkout - facing east. We will have a sliding door and a couple windows on the walkout wall. I've shown the basement floor plan below, but we are open to moving the bar and will probably make the bar smaller than what is shown on the architect's plans. We would be fine with having 4 bar stools. I like the idea of a couch or something comfortable near the bar so some people could hang out at the bar while others sit on the couch. We'd also like room for a card table in this area. We would want the TV visible from the ping pong table, bar, and card table. Comments (4)Thanks for the suggestion! We were originally planning to mount the TV on the wall opposite of the windows. As it is placed right now, every seat on the couch would have a good view of the TV on that wall. We have considered moving the couch farther back (closer to the windows) which would create more space away from the pole but then also farther from the TV. In order to place the TV on that long wall, we would have to place the couch on either side of the pole, which I’m not sure it will fit. I’m definitely open to trying a different configuration but also wanted to avoid walking into the space and immediately seeing the back the couches. last yearI think creating zones in the room would be helpful -and then design each zone to fit the activity that you have in mind
If it were me - I would set up a corner for an art space - would lay down an outdoor rug, then have a terrific table/storage and supplies for all sorts of projects - set up cork on the wall so they could have a gallery wall
Friends of ours installed a low climbing wall in their basement and their kids loved it - they just put down a spongy gymnastics mat below (there are ton of DIY videos online)
Depending on ages other ideas could betrain table
ball pit
mini "stage" with curtains and costumes
pretend kitchen and grocery store
a quiet reading corner fort would be high on my list too
When my boys were little - I rotated things in and out of our basement playroom for variety and it helped a lot

You have lots of wall space for picture ledges that can be used to display, books, artwork and family photos.

9 months agoIt looks like the ping pong table can be moved to a few places. If it is really staying where it is, you'll need to mark out where your husband is saying he needs space to play so that you don't add furniture into the places he is needing open. We also recommend taking hard measurements and posting those as those will allow you to get more help. If anything try adding two chairs in front of the fireplace with an ottoman and maybe placing some bean bags or two other chairs near the column where the ping pong table isn't. If there is space you could look at adding a small game table to play games at and then maybe a small fridge to hold beverages. You also might look at convertible ping pong tables that turn into a place to eat or sit around when not in use if it is going to stay where it is.
