Living room design help

last year

Hi everyone!
I recently built a fireplace and repainted our entry wall, but I'm having trouble tying one side of the room together.
Down the road we're demoing the built in that is in the dining room (not because we want to, but we need to insulate the walls as there is nothing there) so I don't really want to touch that now only to tear it down.
Any suggestions? A paint color for the back wall? ?? I don't know. Open to ideas and rearranging.
Ignore the mess. Baby in the house!

Paint the green wall the same color as the rest of the room. Your TV placement seems much too high, especially for a low sitting MCM type of sofa. I would mount it at eye level either on the green wall or the opposite wall where your Klimt is hung. Then you may want to potentially move your sofa 90 degrees to accommodate. You can also put the TV on an arm that will pull out and angle it somewhat. Wherever you mount it, place some kind of media console or ledge in similar color and style to your coffee table. Potentially relocate the round mirror to above the fireplace.

If you hate this idea and don't want to position your TV at a better height, then still paint the green wall the same color as the rest of your room and get an MCM buffet in place of the furniture you currently have there. I'd get one that is completely closed - excellent storage by a doorway for shoes, hats, scarves, bags, sunglasses. Get something that compliments your coffee table.

No matter what I'd lower the Klimt.

Yep, I'd swap the TV and the Klimt. Reorient the sofa to the new TV wall.

andree,,,, since this post is 2 yrs old, and the subject post was something different, you will get more help if you start a new post asking for paint suggestions. post these pics under a new title and i'll pop over to give you ideas. also state that you are keeping the sofa (if you are) BTW, You're going to have to prime those walls no matter what. Prime them now and then post some other pics asking for wall colors. right now w/that cinnamon wall color it's hard to unsee it and suggest a diff color. You know, you could keep the rug and go w/a Swiss coffee Wall color. or did you want something diff? New dilemma please. lol

I can see your dilemma first. What a beautiful room! Seems to be more of a seating area than a family room, correct? And yes, unfortunately, the size of the furniture is too big for that space. Let's fix that! Put the rug back, lol. The size you had seems appropriate. Without it, it looks like your furniture is floating, or the movers just plopped it down. Furniture placement needs rugs to help delineate the space. You Should only need the front of the legs( of all furniture touching the carpet). Try layering a more modern/ or your style of rug on top of it, and this will give you some inspiration for your style and the rest of the decor you want to put into making it less formal- which I think is what you're saying. Move the piano in front of the windows; it is a beautiful piece and needs a focal point, not tucked away on a wall. Add one more picture below it, use one of the chairs on one side(maybe the side closer to fireplace- add a floor lamp and a small table. Add some greenery next to the piano/ closer to the entrance- something tall- you will have to play with this since I don’t have a floor plan and the size of your furniture. The other chair has to go from your grouping. Sorry. You can also try moving it to where the piano was with another bit of table. You need to free up some room. Too many big pieces, all pushed together. Add window treatments to the window- something off-white and make sure they kiss the floor. I would almost paint your casing black (only those two where the piano will hopefully go). This would tie back into the piano and make it much more architectural. Add a more modern mirror to your fireplace Here is some inspiration, don’t mind my sharpie drawing. Adding more accessories like / throws/ pillows/vases that are more your style will make it look less formal. Right now, it’s giving me some library vibes. @Kristen Hallock well then, you are kinda set! You can get used to having a bookshelf there for a bit. That will help you find just the right new one to go with the floor lamp back there if you still want it. I mean, it depends on whether it really matters now if that corner is just a tad darker. You may instead want lighting that is directed into the new storage unit so you can better see what's there. Maybe you will want a second Christmas tree in that corner. 🤔 I really like your sectional moved more to the middle of the room. It's amazing to me how it makes that space seem so grand and welcoming. Actually a bit surprising the difference a few feet can make, don't you think? How does the family feel about it? Are you comfy with it yet? We haven't done any entertaining since 2019 and didn't do a lot before then. However, we like having a table behind the loveseat that faces the TV. We can have fondue there together while we watch a favorite movie. We can work on mindless projects there while watching a soccer match. Sometimes I just like a change of view while teleworking. The table is just the right height to set a mug on when we sit on the loveseat. The coffee table requires leaning forward, and I'm too lazy. ☺️ I am glad about this new arrangement for you. Now, do you think you want a runner between your short wall and the sectional? Or do you want bare floor there? Or are you going to look for an area rug that goes almost to the walls in all directions? What do the pros think? And if you get a runner and smaller area rug, should they match? Or should they be very different? This could be a very interesting discussion! Can't wait to read what the pros say about one rug or two, matching or contrasting.

I thnk the sofa back needs to float and create a room divide, from the entry also allowing to look out the windows, the fireplace, and move the tv between the blanket rack and the tree. reuse the table from the entry as your tv stand. Put the art over the fireplace or possibly the mirror. The art might look better on the green wall.

The cabinet used to be the old tv stand, but was moved to accomodate the fireplace. The fireplace is built in, so not moveable.

The sofa is too large to move to seperate the room, unfortunately, and moving it to the back wall where the blanket ladder is would completely block off the dining area.

Any further suggestions with that info?

Seems the sofa is too large to turn it toward the blanket ladder wall. A smaller sectional with a chair would have been more flexible. When you can I'd reorient by moving the TV.

If you leave the sofa where it is and put it on the mirror wall, will you be able to see it from the sofa? If so, you'd get to keep the sofa in place, put mirror above the fireplace, lower Gustav, and just paint the accent wall.

I was going to suggest the same as Kendrah. However, I like your accent wall color! I just think it’s on the wrong wall. I’d paint the fireplace wall green instead.

I've moved the sectional just a bit away from the window wall to give the room some breathing space. I would find a better, larger canvas for the back wall and add a floor lamp to the room.

Be more deliberate in selecting items and placing them. The biggest issue in the room is that accessory placement is a bit too random IMO.

Bringing the color of the sectional over to act as the background for your fireplace might help this wall "float" a bit less.

If sofa can’t be reconfigured, then let’s tweak…remove the ladder, pull the sectional away from the window so the back of it aligns with vertical plane of the window cornice. Center the Klimt 6” above the sectional on that end wall. Place the tree to the right of the sectional but centered in the space between the sectional and the wall. Cat toys could go behind sectional. A fabric storage basket next to the tree could hold the extra throws. Move the framed baby footprints to the baby’s room. Move the plant that’s to the left of the fireplace to the right side and move the bromeliad plant to the left of the fireplace. Keep the two hex shelves in the same positions, relative to each other, but move them down so that the top of the green portion of the left most shelf aligns with the frame at the bottom of the tv. Paint the entry wall the same color as the rest of the room. Move the bird cage onto the cabinet with a couple hardback books placed underneath it and the coffee table plant placed inside it, if possible, with the other plant grouped with them. Group the other 3 items on the right side of the console cabinet. Then move the plant on the bottom shelf to the coffee table. A basket of baby gear or toys could go on the bottom shelf of the cabinet. Fill all 3 cubbies with storage baskets.
