New to this tool. Hope the text is repeating itself...

Repainting a simple home located in the Texas Hill Country. The home has no accents such as shutters or fancy molding. We are working with a lot of siding, trim, many doors & windows, metal railing & columns along with an old metal roof. I want to keep with neturals. Thinking over time a blaring sun will fade the body of the house, so I want it to be a lighter colored shade. (White would most likely be a mess pretty quickly with dust and pollen.) At this point I think the trim color would also be the metal color. I might be open to an accent color on the front door. There is a large Oklahoma stone patio in the back of the house and on the walkway leading to the front of the house. Seems like every color idea I see online has a lot of grey and I really don't think that fits this house or its location. I am leaning towards SW Khaki Shade body / SW Tiki Hut trim & metal or SW Softer Tan body / SW Foothills. Trying to see if there is anyway to work with colors like these and give it a more up-to-date look. I plan on replacing the two lights by the front door with a dark bronze lights to match the hardware. Pictures are from a prior listing and a few amateur shots by me. It's a wonderful family retreat on a riverside with a beautiful working ranch across the river with acre after acre of beauty. Love this place, need advice to show the exterior of the house a little love. Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks for your input! The Sherwin Williams handout suggests an orangish color as an accent. It is called Brandywine. Wondering if that would work on the front door? Neighbors on each side of us have green houses. Hoping the Khaki Shade will not be predominantly green. Handout color combo is Khaki Shade for the body and Tiki Hut for the trim. Picking up a sample of the Brandywine today.

I need pics of the house from much closer to see the entry the most of the exterior closer up.

The single door with the brown chest to the left is the front door. The garage doors are to the left of the chest. There is one picture with a few windows and no door. This wall is in the front of the house to the right of the front door. Also included a picture of the back of the house. (The back of the house is much more fun and where we spend most of our time.

The storm door will be removed. The door behind it has glass in the top half (kind of like a clear stained glass effect.)

Question: Is the metal roof grey of brown? hard to tell from the photos.

Just had a look at the colors you're considering and I don't see a significant change from what you already have.

The roof is grey. We painted a couple of coats of the paint and found the colors to be darker. Open to other ideas though.
Painted about 14 different color combinations and noticed most of the darker colors that we chose had a lot more grey than I was comfortable with. (I was trying a lot of different taupes.) So I thought maybe if I just used a darker version of what I have…
Another option I am considering is Softer Tan and Foothills. Foothills and Tiki Hut are both darker than what I currently have. Outside of the painting I am trying to figure out if there is any way to make the front of the house more interesting. Was even wondering about shutters. Maybe painting the garage doors the front door color would help?

You need much more contrast between the trim color and the color of the body of the house. Treat yourself to a nice, new garage door. It’s a wonderful house and the garage door is just ugly, even if you paint it.

Your house seems to be located in a very nice setting...

With your metal roof being gray, I would go to a greige instead of the tan colours you're considering with yellow undertones. With warm white for the trim and black for the accents it wll also give your house a different more updated look.

I also suggest your replace your 2 sconces by the front door for much larger black ones (should be 1/4 to 1/3 the height of the door). I would also paint the garage door either the same colour as the siding or black.

At the bottom of the visual, I show some Oklahoma stone so that you can see how it coordinates with this scheme.

Note: Keep in mind that when the entire house is painted the colour will look lighter in the outdoor light than what it looks like on a small sample. I suggest you paint 2 coats of paint on a large corrugated board (available in dollar stores) and walk around your house to see how the colour looks in different locations.

Wow! I love it! I see two of your colors are Benjamin Moore. Do you feel strongly about those or are there Sherwin Williams paints that I could use to achieve this look? Definitely an improvement!

I think the railing on the balcony in the back and the handrails going down to the stone patio need a darker look than the white color. Maybe the Agreeable Gray? Hmmm. Would it be bad to use the Agreeable Gray on the back metal columns too in the back? One of the columns going down the stairs to the stone porch is welded to the top of the handrail. There are metal columns on both back patios. Or even use the Onyx color on the metal?

In answer to your 1st question about BM paint vs SW paint. I wouldn't ask for a colour match as it might not be precise. Consequently look into these 2 replacements from SW:

It difficult to judge precise colours on a computer so my best advice is Test... Test... Test.

You can buy small sample BM paints for testing and compare to the SW and see which one is best on site.

Thank you! I will definitely try these. All of the columns are metal. Thinking if I switch the metals in the back to Agreeable Gray, the Onyx or Tricorn color it would be ok? Not sure if the inconsistency would be weird or not? Or just switching all metals front and back to one of those colors…

For the back, I don't know exactly which of the columns are metal but I did part of the back showing a black railing and I think that could work quite nicely,,,

If you do the columns in the back in black perhaps the ones in the front should also be black:

While I understand your desire for a change, I think that the beautiful color of the rocks in the background and your stone patio should lead the way. I would draw from those colors…into the deep golden tones. Darker golds than you know have. With black trim to compliment your windows. NO white trim at all. It looks jarring to me. A beautiful rustic wooden garage door to match the “box” on the porch. I would try to unify the styles of windows on your home. You have double pane, single pane, and multiple pane windows (the large picture window on the right front). But play up the relationship of the house with the gorgeous setting. Let the rocks lead your color choices.

Great home and great spot. You have wonderful things on which to design the outside: the gray metal roof and the black windows. I found this photo for inspiration; black window frames andblack muntins that match a black front door.

Good points ptreckel and elcieg. Appreciate all the great thoughts and comments. I think three of the things I like best about the photo are… it is a change, I love the use of black, and the contrast. I started thinking about the inside of the house and realize I have a lot of browns & it is more of a rustic look. I am now wondering about working the rustic look with a gold or brown and keeping the black. What darker golds should I be looking at? I never really thought about this color. At what point does gold start to look yellow?

While nice, I think the above scheme will end up being too plain for the subject house.

With all the green surrounding your home, I’d be looking into a green shade. I like these with black trim.

Whatever moody accent color you decide (black, brown, etc), consider having the whole porch area done in that one color, to set if off nicely with the grand color scheme going on everywhere else. A minky grey brown with black trim and creamy accents maybe.

BM Nantucket Gray (not gray when painted outside, more of a khaki-green) would look good.

Use BM Moonlight White for the trim.

The best time to think of house color is in the depths of winter or whatever season is ugliest. You may hate my next thought, and I don't know how to colorize pictures. Maybe someone will to it. But, you love black... Have you considered a dark charcoal grey exterior with warm mid-tone brown trim and a strawberry-red or chartreuse green door? See... Told you you'd go, "whaaaaa?"

All good thoughts. With winter still here, it is definitely not so green around the house at the moment. Looking forward to the spring show with wild flowers and everything in bloom. Neighbors on each side are using green, so I have moved away from that color.
I have taken many of the different ideas and will be heading out to the house today for sampling. Excited to see what this day brings. I did give more thought about keeping the look more consistent inside and out. And of course, following the lead of the stone. Definitely decided to try some of the deep golds as ptreckel suggested. I am so ready for change I think I temporarily forgot what it feels like inside. Still bringing a few shades of gray that show up in the stone. This day will be interesting!
