Moldings - strip and repaint or replace?
Comments (15)I lived in two 1830s apartments. In the first I stripped or burned off all the paint except on the jib doors and the entry door which I sent out for stripping, I did not strip one piece of millwork that was a profile so common here that it is still produced and available at Home Depot ( a 3/4" ogee moulding). I replaced that. I got lead poisoning which eventually cleared. (I wore a respirator but I was very careless about wearing gloves when burning off the paint and ended up with peripheral numbness and elevated blood levels). Anyway, when I sold that apartment and moved into another, I looked at the casing, which was a unique profile and found someone to make a knife for me and reproduce it, I replaced most of the other millwork which was buildups of still-available profiles. I stripped the entry door and paneling, and the shutters did not need to be stripped in this apartment. It was much more cost effective to reproduce than it was to strip and repair, including some custom radius work. In my apartment the millwork was always painted. In a building of your era in NYC, I would expect that it was mostly meant to be painted, particularly with the Classical Revival/Colonial Revival interior feel that I am getting. I could be wrong. I believe the other issue you may have in NYC is disposal of the hazardous waste if you use any kind of chemical stripper, which then becomes lead-laden hazardous waste....See Moreshould I take off these shutters or repaint them?
Comments (24)WOW! You all have been so helpful to me. I love this forum! martinca, yes we have lots of azaleas and the like...very southern! Maybe one day we'll paint the house and post a pic for you! Awm03, thanks for the photoshop! I do need to think about this idea about one color for the future. For now, it's just small stuff. Suero, yikes! Thanks for doing that for me....definitely not a fan of red shutters! Littlebug5, My3dogs, and hoosiergirl, I can totally agree that the red door is not the best color. And I can see how it clashes with the orange and there are lots of better colors out there. I just really wanted a personal stamp on the house. The idea of matching occurred to me (the door was originally the same color as the shutters) and I was thinking of green....but there is already so much green in that yard. I think if you saw the inside of my house you could see what color people we are. I even dress in a colorful way...mixing patterns(hmmm, I wonder how many of us resemble our home decorationg in terms of personal dress? That would be a fun experiment, match the homeowner to the house!). Like I said, I totally get that the door is not perfect in terms of matching but it just makes me happy! I love it. My3 dogs, hmmm. I can see what you mean! I think it would look nice with the siding that color too (did you notice there door shutters were still on in that pic?) : ) hosenemis, we pulled the shutters off around the door and big window already. They were anchored in the mortar. Not a real problem. However, having said all this I am definitely NOT painting the shutters, as was one of my ideas (thanks to suero for helping with this!) and will most likely be leaving them as well. I will focus my attention on landscaping for now. It's funny: having posted this a while ago, I now see my house and I am much happier with it. I also think I'd rather paint the whole whole taupe and keep the red door so for now it won't be perfect but I am quite happy with that! I love this forum and so appreciate all who have chimed in to help me!...See MoreExterior Shutters/Front Door Colors

Comments (1)Functional shutters for a window that size would most likely be bifold at 12.5" each. I personally don't care that much for shutters. I'm not saying they don't look ok, I guess I don't like the extra baggage. I do like window boxes, they add charm. I would look for aluminum that looks like wrought iron (with a coupleof squiggles or other simple design) to put in the place of shutters just to keep the sides of the windows from looking too plain. You could probably put a hanging plant on them if you wanted. Maintenance should be minimal too....See Moregraywings123
