Yes. They are getting taller, deeper, and I've noticed the standard widths are larger. I live in a 1970s home and the double sink vanity in the bathroom is about 62" wide which is sufficient for two sinks and works quite well. Most vanities I've found (when researching for an eventual remodel) are 72" wide for a double vanity and most 60-62" vanities are single sink. When I replaced the vanity in my main/guest bathroom, I opted for one the same width as the current one, but it is taller and I was barely able to squeeze it into the room after taking off the door and door jambs, due to the extra depth.

I think a big part of the original concern was whether photographs of the OP's kitchen implied her endorsement of specific workers who contributed to the finished product. Ultimately, I believe that it's the responsibility of the prospective client to do the homework of asking for references when they see finished products they like. I wouldn't worry about someone looking at a finished kitchen and assuming that the person showing them the picture was responsible for every aspect of it. If they do, that's their problem. My GC, whose work I was mostly satisfied with but have reservations about recommending, asked for pictures of my finished kitchen, and I provided them. Upon reflection, I found it amusing that the pictures showed almost entirely the work of other people he had no hand in hiring--the cabinets and the soapstone counters, in particular. Yes, the GC's plumbing, drywalling, carpentry, and electrical work made the total kitchen possible, but the very few of the aesthetic aspects that make the kitchen appealing had anything to do with the GC. I designed the kitchen and I found and hired those craftsmen, and they did the beautiful work. Still, I'm fine with him using photos of my finished kitchen to show a project he has worked on. He doesn't present himself as a KD, cabinet maker, or counter installer, and few people want to see photos of plumbing and drywall anyway. Again, if the people he shows my pictures to don't understand all that, it's really their problem for not doing their homework. Several people, after seeing my kitchen in person, have asked me who my GC was and if I would recommend him. I have always been honest about my reservations, but knowing how difficult it is to find someone good in my area, I have not said I wouldn't hire him again and, in fact, I have hired him for other projects. I just know better what to be careful about. Two friends have also hired him, based on my recommendation with reservations. One was completely satisfied and the other experienced the same issues I did, but at least she felt duly warned. Interestingly, I haven't had any calls from strangers asking for my endorsement of the GC. Perhaps he knows what I would say. The people responsible for my cabinets and counters also have photos of my kitchen, and I assume they have shown them to prospective clients. When others ask whether I would recommend those two, I do so enthusiastically and without reservation. I can count at least seven people who have hired the cabinet maker as a result of my endorsement, and several others have hired my soapstone guy. Ultimately, though, it's recommendations that matter far more than pictures.

I really appreciate all these comments -- some things I hadn't even considered with a home from the 40s. Our current place is from the 70s, and we did have to change out all the windows but otherwise it's got insulation etc (and we've added higher rated insulation along the south and west walls because we took down the siding at one point). The 40s home has all single-pane windows, with jalousie windows in the bathrooms. The original windows from the 40s look so quaint, but the addition windows from the 70s are not. practigal -- we definitely would have to live with it as-is for a while... my DH has already talked about looking in the attic, etc, before making any type of commitment to buy, but we want to have some ideas of what could be done (within our budget, within the scale of the neighborhood etc). I'll have to come back later with a floor plan. We have not seen the inside of the home, just visited the neighborhood and looked online at pics. We have some idea of the floor plan, but it wouldn't be to scale and would just be guesses. It may all be moot, the home was pending once, then available w/slight price drop, and now it's pending again. It's the kind of place I could see a flipper trying to score; since we're not experts in buying/selling, and we'd likely be there 20 years or more, it's hard to rush into it. We rushed into the current place, but maybe it wasn't the best decision, so we want to be more careful if we buy something else.

@jslazart I am getting the value added numbers from comps and real market feedback. I just bought the house eight months ago. The house was on the market for quite a long time. It consistently had a lot of foot traffic coming through the house due to sq footage, number of rooms, location, neighborhood, etc. The feedback the real estate team kept saying is that the house was not open enough and they didn't like the kitchen. The price of the house drastically fell due to it being on the market for so long and potential buyers being scared away. Similar houses with less sq ft and yard size are selling for $50,000 - $80,000 more than what I bought the house for. The main difference being slightly more open and updated kitchens. This data is much more accurate than a regional breakdown. Real Estate works off of trends and comps. I personally didn't/don't like it either, but I am not afraid of a project. It wouldn't be so bad if the previous home owners weren't terrible at design. The counter tops are quartz, which is nice, but they are really ugly. I'm wanting to do this without a desire for immediate or really any ROI. I just want a better area for myself. I plan to be in the house for quite some time. I will work on the 2D prints. I might just draw over the existing blue prints to make it easier to read. I'm sorry, but I disagree with your DIY statement. It is a broad question, yes. However, I know I can do a lot of things myself. I can easily tear out the drywall, take out the existing cabinets/appliances, re-plumb the sink, move electrical boxes, etc. I just have done all of this stuff in single occurrences and never during a remodel. I guess I should have asked the steps of how to do this myself, but I didn't want this to be a DIY guide.
