Has the economy made you re-think your potential purchases?
Comments (31)I believe the long-term prospects for the US economy are bleak. Regardless of who is president, what the deficit is, etc. the country's infrastructure is largely dependent on oil. Oil is a finite resource, that is going to go nowhere but up in price over the long-term. We have missed the boat on implementing forms of alternative energy - should have been done decades ago, to avert this crisis. I am a single Mom, raising a teen alone, and it makes me a bit nervous. However, I was frugal even as a young person, so tightening the belt is like putting on a familiar old bathrobe. In 2008 I spent a total of $17 on plants - a couple flats of annuals - and approx. $200 on tools, potting soil, etc. at the nurseries. That is significantly less than previous years. Nevertheless, I acquired more plants than ever! How? - Started hundreds of plants from seed via the winter-sowing method, at least 50 species/cultivars I'd never grown before. - Hosted a Spring plant swap and received a couple dozen new types of plants and offloaded a bunch of extras! Win-win. - Ordered 50 more shrub & tree seedlings from the NH State Nursery, for $1 apiece. ONE DOLLAR each. These seedlings are 1-2 years old, so they're smaller than what you would buy in a nursery, but most have grown remarkably fast. They become $20-30 plants in a couple years! State and county organizations are a GREAT source of inexpensive plant stock. - Placed a small order at Bluestone during their June 50% off sale....See MoreList of potential cascading plants for retaining wall
Comments (23)I grow tunica (petrorhagia) on the top of stone wall, but in an area that is slightly shaded. I also have it in a hot sunny garden. It's got GREAT texture, blooms for a long time, and is trouble free. It drops an occasional seedling, which I love. On the wall, it does cascade. In the sunny area of the wall I've got snow in summer, but I'm planning to replace it with gypsophilia repens, which is MUCH better behaved and has similar silvery foliage. Love my saponaria - great foliage that would contrast well with tunica, as it's robust looking. Did I miss something, of did you not tell us how long the wall is? The number of varieties you want to use would depend on this....See MoreWhich Photos are most important for potential buyers?
Comments (19)Front of house - if it's not included I wonder what they're trying to hide. Kitchen - expensive to change if you really hate the style or layout. Bathroom - as for kitchen. Living area - whichever one photographs best, show features of room, eg window, fireplace, built-in shelves. Another living area or master bedroom or outdoor entertaining area. I agree with Redcurls, don't emphasise your furniture. Pictures of furniture make me wonder whether the room is too small to be photographed, or if there's something out of view that I need to know about, or if the realtor is sloppy and would be a hassle to deal with....See MorePhotos can tell where you live
Comments (13)I don't care if it has been de-bunked by Snopes or any other source. I think it is a great idea to share such stories even if they are completely fabricated. Too many people walk around in a fog, completely oblivious to what is going on around them. Now that the "story" is out there, even if it is not based in fact, at least not yet, it might give some nare-do-well's an idea. Some of the kids in my neighborhood grwoing up would play the game where they would put a purse attached to a string alongside the road and would yank the string when a sucker would stop to check it out. That was all in fun but it proves people will stop for such ploys. Ted Bundy used a fake cast to lure one of his victims and claimed to have a stalled car to lure another. I don't promote paranoia, but being aware of your surroundings and being suspicious is always the right approach. I can think of several occassions where that approach saved me from theft at best and a beating at worse. Not exactly on-topic, but about a year ago we had an incident near Columbia where a woman was driving her normal commute to work very early in the morning. The road passed a train track with a siding for an industrial plant. Workers off-loading a poisonous gas, I believe it was chlorine gas, messed up and released a very large cloud of gas. The woman, probably thinking it was fog, drove through it. The noxious gas choked off the oxygen supply to her car and her car stalled and coasted to a stop. She was found dead a few feet away from the car as she apparently tried to run out of the cloud. Another driver, coming from the opposite direction, saw the cloud, saw the tanker car, became suspicious and used his car to block the road and called 911. He saved other people's lives. I took the opportunity to chat with my children, one of whom was about to start driving, and told them how this could have been avoided. Fog suddenly pops up, look around. Is it fog or something else? If it's too late and the engine stalls, throw it in neuttral and allow the car to coast. With the car in gear it will slow down much faster, out of gear and maybe you can coast out the other side. In other words, be aware of your surroundings and THINK. To satisfy the censors, I suppose I should remind everyone to practice these principles when traveling away from our smaller homes. Scott...See Moresheloveslayouts
