Full sun plants to be planted in fieldstone retaining wall?
Comments (2)The smaller sedum are nice and soapwort... do you mind plants that would hang/trail? Perhaps Black-eyed Susan "Vine" (I think I have the Latin for that one listed on my trade list to clarify better), morning glories (especially Japanese MG's and MGs could be planted at the base of the wall and climb up - plus they can self-sow and in your climate, you stand a really good chance of them being "extended" annuals), ivy (those that tolerate full sun) always look awesome against/on stone walls in my opinion... I know there's a "recipe" for taking existing moss and making it into a "paste" and "painting" it on (hrmm reminds me of a Chia pet hehe) and you could likely find a moss that grooved on full sun... Miniature luffa has a delicate vine and much smaller fruits than standard luffa and has dainty little yellow blooms.... I wonder what plant "forms" you prefer though and what colours - foliage and/or blooms... that would help to narrow down some choice selections for you. Hopefully you can avoid using chicken wire and get things in place without it... it can be a pain to get out once plants are established.......See MorePlants to cascade over stone wall?
Comments (25)Wow many fantastic and interesting suggestions and great pictures from scottyboipdx and herblady49,..just this year i added two low walls to the garden collected some old socks i had and filled them with soil then added Campanula then stuck them in between the rocks,..some are already blooming but by next year they should have thrived. Comments (8)Old standbys for the top of a retaining wall are Creeping Phlox, Basket of Gold (I think it's now called Aurinia saxitalia) which is pictured here with variegated Wintercreeper. I don't recommend the Wintercreeper however, it is invasive and requires a huge amount of pruning to keep it in its bounds. You might also consider one of the low creeping junipers (eg Blue Rug) which we use on the long stretches of retaining walls we have on our property. They are an excellent groundcover and require very little maintenance other than an occasional haircut when they reach out to grab unsuspecting passers-by :-) Other plants that like the excellent drainage of stone walls are Dianthus and Snow in Summer....See Morecascading ground cover for retaining wall
Comments (6)Right now sunroses or Helianthemum cultivars are in full, screaming bloom. Resembling a groundcover form of rockrose (to which they are related), they form a low evergreen mound that cascades nicely and that is covered in late spring by a profusion of quarter-sized flowers in a wide range of bright colors. Shearing lightly after primary bloom will often encourage a later season flush. Very drought tolerant and adaptable to poor soils as long as drainage is good. I can't keep them in stock at the nursery at this time of year - sold through about 50 gallon-sized plants this past weekend. All of the plants listed will work well for this situation but many tend to have a rather limited bloom season. May be best to select more than one type with different bloom periods to extend your season of color....See Moremmegaera
