What roses would elegantly cascade over a low wall?
Comments (41)I looked up some cold hardy roses for you, that could be used to drape over a wall, that are in commerce this week. These roses are available at hortico.com, as of Oct 14, 2014 I would just plant the larger climbers, such as A.S.Gray further away from the wall, allowing them to grow as a shrub and then drape over the wall, ; all of these re-bloom; -Alister Stella Gray' a beautiful small flowered Noisette. One of my favorite roses. A friend used 'Alister Stella Gray' to make her bridal coronet. She had more than 200 other roses to choose from our garden, but this one won her heart. hortico.com lists this as hardy to zone 5, which surprised me, but their company is in Canada so I would expect them to have a lot of experience with roses that are cold hardy. -'Blossomtime' zone 5, I grow this both as a climber and a shrub, the shrub grown one naturally sends out longer canes that droop down at the ends covered with fragrant pink blooms. (I prune the climber in a columnar shape) Because the roses bloom in small clusters with side buds, each bloom cycle is extended. Very fragrant. When I bring mixed rose bouquets to my friends they almost always ask "What's this rose?" -Golden Showers' zone 3, artless golden yellow roses. -Lichtkonigen Lucia' zone 5 (Lucia, saint of light, a saint popular in Scandinavia) beautiful shapely yellow roses. grows to be c. 8 feet tall here, near san francisco california Good luck choosing a rose that you will love for many years, Luxrosa...See MoreSuggestions for cascade of flowers over 10' Wall????
Comments (12)All fabulous suggestions. I would not discount ivy geranium, which blooms most of the year and decorates retaining walls in Highland Park (or at least it did when I lived there in the 1980s). I also remember being entranced by tall retaining walls covered with orchid colored iceplant blossoms (the little leafed variety). The nicest thing about the iceplant cascades was their narrowness: driveways would not be blocked by billowing flowers. Unfortunately, the show was brief, but the tiny leaves looked rather mossy for the rest of the year....See MoreCascading plants for a retaining wall...
Comments (3)How does Sweet Autumn Clematis (clematis terniflora) do in your zone? A couple of those (3 max. as they can grow to 30+ feet) will cover/drape your 120' wall in pretty short order. I had a magnificent specimen in the mid-Atlantic, but it self seeded like gangbusters and became somewhat thuggish. However, with deference to a spectacular plant - the growing season there usually started in March and could go beyond Thanksgiving. Zone 5 wouldn't have the same lengthy conditions and SAC would probably be better behaved. Then there is always Virginia Creeper (Parthenocissus Quinquefolia) which could be trained to drape. I have the creeping phlox subulata in a stone retaining wall built into a slope. It's good to soften the edges of walls, etc. but its cascading habit is somewhat limited. Also look into sweet potato vines - annuals, but cheap at the big box garden centers. Saw some Google images of spv's used as both ground covers and trailers so there's cascading potential there too....See MoreCascading companion plants for rose bush
