Suggestions for cascade of flowers over 10' Wall????

I am looking for any suggestions on flowering plants that will "cascade" over the ridge of my wall. I have a 10 foot wall that is the first house people see when entering my neighborhood. The wall faces north but the northern side gets full sun in Summer. The planting would be done on the south side of the wall about 2 feet below the crest of the wall and then I would like to cascade over the wall and down the north side. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Some kinds of ground roses send out canes 8-10 feet. They don't need a lot of maintenance.

Lady Banks rose, a vine, is often used as a trailing groundcover, but it only blooms in the spring. Course you could always mix it with a group 1 Clematis.....
Actually almost any vine, if it doesn't have anything to climb on, would do the trick.

Trailing rosemary looks nice cascading, but I'm not sure it would trail 10'.

Is this a real window box, hanging below a window or is it on the ground? If it's hanging I think you'd have to stay with minis, and small ones at that. If it's on the ground a full size rose should be OK. But even then I think you'd have to keep it on the small side because of the size of the box. The problem is knowing how big something is going to get in your climate. You should probably check with a local rose society to see what they would suggest for your area.

One of those iron plant stands might work, but it would have to be very sturdy and large enough to support a pot the size necessary for a carpet rose. I used to grow a carpet rose in a wooden half-barrel. Wouldn't the first encounter with the thorns scare your pug away? Maybe not.... deer eat roses. If you get a very large container, I suggest one of the lightweight terra cotta look-alikes. Some are very pricey but I bought a large one (shorter than 3 feet) at HD for $25.00. If you buy a ceramic pot that size, you'll have trouble moving it around when it is filled with damp soil. Jen

Wow many fantastic and interesting suggestions and great pictures from scottyboipdx and herblady49,..just this year i added two low walls to the garden collected some old socks i had and filled them with soil then added Campanula then stuck them in between the rocks,..some are already blooming but by next year they should have thrived. Philip

Northern Lights Azaleas are hardy to Zone 3. The whole series is amazing, and definitely worth looking into. I have three of them: Mandarin Lights, Northern Hi-Lights and Tri-Lights. They are very floriferous and fragrant too. They are in different, but all difficult points in the garden. I have had them now for five years now, and the Mandarin azalea (the one on the northern slope)is the biggest- about 1.2 meter high and likewise in diameter. Regarding Hydrangea, I will probably go for Endless Summer. It is also blue, it's hardy to zone 4 and blooms for the whole summer supposedly. Yes, irises don't like it in the shade, regardless what the experts say. Thanks for the daylilies idea- I think that they will look good there. I already have the euonymous and vinca there, some hostas, clematis (three types)out of which Guernsey Cream is the most amazing in that shade, because it is big and white. I might try Astilbe. Thanks!

Bougainvillea or plumbago would be colorful, easy, and require little water.

Passiflora or trailing lantana might also work.

Scarlet trumpet vine. Beautiful flowers on a vigorous plant.

Just be aware that a south-facing wall in Silver Lake will be very, very hot 6 months out of the year (more for the foilage than the roots). All of the suggestions above would still probably work in that situation. You could add honeysuckle to that list too.

What about Thunbergia mysorensis? It is a great vine, long hanging racemes of brick red/yellow flowers are spectacular.

thanks everyone for the good suggestions. I think I'm goint to be bold and mix some climbing roses with some passiflora and Scarlet trumpet....and maybe some flowering potato vines through it for good measure. No plumbago though....once cleared an entire hillside of plumbago.

I think a mix would be good -- particularly things that may bloom at different times.

I also have a form of CA buckwheat, a native, that spills over a retaining wall; it was full of little pink puffs in summer.

All fabulous suggestions. I would not discount ivy geranium, which blooms most of the year and decorates retaining walls in Highland Park (or at least it did when I lived there in the 1980s). I also remember being entranced by tall retaining walls covered with orchid colored iceplant blossoms (the little leafed variety). The nicest thing about the iceplant cascades was their narrowness: driveways would not be blocked by billowing flowers. Unfortunately, the show was brief, but the tiny leaves looked rather mossy for the rest of the year.
