Use mosaic tile on floor of commode room?

We're renovating our MBa and plan to use a mosaic tile for the new shower floor. Each mosaic tile is 12"x12" with individual tiles about 2"x2", matte porcelain. We love this tile and got a great deal on it and have a lot more than we need for the shower, including the floor, a niche in the wall, and the vertical walls on a built-in bench. The MBa has a separate commode room, and we're considering using this same mosaic tile for the floor in there, but we're not sure if that would look weird or not and would appreciate any thoughts anyone may have.

Yes, you absolutely can use mosaic tile on the floor, as long as it's rated for flooring. We did just that in this master bath with a curbless shower.

And yes, keep all the floor tile the same throughout, including the WC.

Sabrina Alfin Interiors (Hope this reply gets to you): Unfortunately, we don't have enough of the mosaic to do the main floor area in the bathroom; we bought all the store had on clearance. We think the 12X24 tile we're using for the main floor looks good adjacent to the shower floor and so are thinking it would also look good adjacent to the commode room floor. (By the way, the commode room will be about 23 sq ft with probably a pocket door.) So our choices are to use the mosaic in the commode room, along with the shower floor; or just run the main floor tile on into the commode room. (We'll also be running that main floor tile into our closet, which will have a wider, cased opening instead of the door currently there.) My wife simply loves the mosaic and is looking for other ways to use it without making the final design look odd. Thanks for any additional comments you can provide.

Is it the cobalt blue? I had initially picked that, but decided to go with grey and white, and moved the cobalt to my second bathroom remodel. It has a combo tub/shower, and I'm picturing the walls/ceiling in the cobalt blue arabesque/lantern tiles. I'm envisioning it with one of the mission style oak vanities, as I think that will go nicely. I haven't decided if I'm full-on embracing the them and going with a brick-y floor - that's the next project! (you and I seem to have similar thoughts - definitely post anything you find, I love looking at things!)

My personal preference is for wall tiles in the niche, and for the niche box itself to correspond directly with tile dimensions/grout lines (which is admittedly quite tricky to do at the construction stage, but aesthetically I just hate seeing niches randomly placed without reference to grout lines). Here is a recent project with 24x24 tiles (requiring one cut of the tile as a 24x24 niche would have been too tall). The niche is framed with Caesarstone pieces (this is my usual approach as I typically also use matching Caesarstone pieces on the top of the shower curb). Here is another example of mine, in this case with the niche framed in stock 'big box store' Carrara marble door thresholds. Again, the niche is the same size as the tile:

Dottie - I could not have done this without an educated designer - it's not just about the design choices although I would never have come up with design choices as my brain isn't hardwired in those kinds of visually imaginative ways. I can appreciate things but I don't know how to pull them together and I wouldn't have the ability to figure out where to even start in terms of the sea of vendors. I am good about researching appliances and functions but get lost in the sea of visual possibilities :-) And I can't even imagine dealing with codes and such since Los Angeles is code crazy - I wanted to move some floor electrical outlets up a bit from the floor as I found it difficult to reach them when I had some hip issues so I was thinking about for the future - I was told that if I move a plug, the whole thing has to be rewired back to the panel box. And the darn kitchen sink has to be approved by the UL LOL - who would think a kitchen sink could be dangerous.

How can I prepare a mosaic tile floor so we can put down LVP?

Do nothing...and install the LVP as-is. The terrazzo you have is a HIGH VALUE floor. I mean SUPER expensive to duplicate. I would 'give up' on the warranty of an LVP floor and just toss it in. To do anything to this floor will ruin it for future generations. To level it you would have to grind, grind, grind, grind to get SLC to grab. Once you do that, you have lost the value of the item. At that point, you might as well spend the $3/sf to jack this out. It will be worthless. The TILE is see in the background can be left in place, you can do a bit of grinding and then fill the grout lines with SLC. You need to do some scarification of the tile to get the SLC to GRAB the tile. So long as it grabs you can fill the grout lines and flatten it to the best of your ability. I would EXPECT to use T-moldings where the two floors meet. The only way to avoid this would be to remove it all. In essence you are covering the HIGH VALUE products with a lower-value product. I get it. The current floors are not very attractive (compared to today's trends). But realize the value of the terrazzo. If you were to replicate the floor today (with modernized product) you would be looking at $25-$30/sf. Compare that to the $4/sf product you are going to cover it with. Right. LVP is a downgrade compared to terrazzo. No way around it. I would leave the terrazzo in tact and untouched. I would give up on any warranty and install the LVP over top. The tile can be dealt with as you wish. But remember to put in t-moldings between the LVP sitting over the terrazzo and the LVP sitting over the tile. NO underlayment. Most LVP's do NOT allow underlayment. Especially if they have attached underpad. This is LVP not laminate. If you want to get a cork underlay on these floors to help even out the surface then work with $4/sf laminate. That will buy you a TOP OF THE LINE European laminate. You can then use 6mm cork to correct some of the unevenness. But LVP will not allow that type of underpad.

Do you know the manufacturer and model number of the tile? If so, you might be able to buy more from a different supplier. Even if you have to pay full price for it, the additional tile you need to cover the floor won't be a lot of square footage, so it would not be a huge expense.

I would suggest you go with the fewest grout lines in a room with a toilet. More grout will mean more maintenance due to stray male urine...

So.......you have left over mosaic: ) No big whoo.

Don't put it in the potty closet. Just don't.

You already got "a great deal" - don't look a gift horse in the mouth and complicate the bath or your transitions or your cleaning life.

( if still obsessed with using it up? Make a vertical accent behind the potty.....not less than two feet wide and floor to ceiling. Float a couple shelves in, in it, white to match white potty Other than that? Toss it )
