Tile baseboard how to

My bathroom is being remodeled soon in mostly large scale marble look porcelain 24”x48”. This line of tile has 3x24 bullnose available and also 4x24 wall tile i will be using around the tub. My question is for the walls that wont have tile on them. What is done for baseboards in bathrooms? ATM there is 5 inch white square tile and that will be removed during demo. I could use just the bullnose but i think that will look unsubstantial. i thought i could cut down some of the wall tile to add 3 more inches to the bullnose. However i dont know if that will look odd. Any ideas?

To just add a bit of info . It is always best to keep posts to one per space . Have you got the issue with the shower figured out? I use the same tile for the baseboard as the floor usually just cut to size with a schluter trim piece . IMO bullnose tile is a dated look and since you are using those very contemporary tiles in the shower I would stick to the same as the floor in the bathroom. I actually rarely bother with tile baseboard in bathrooms just use the same as in the rest of the house.

Answer: it depends. One thought is to use the wood baseboard you have in the rest of the house. It should be a poly version, if any of it is near a shower.

Another idea is the wall tile. I would cap it in a schluter strip, which give a clean look.

Also depends on how high high your ceilings are and the style of your bathroom.

So, any photos or more information would be very helpful.

I'd use the 4 x 24 wall tile/schluter if the bath is leaning contemporary or modern.

MDF 1 4 or 1 x 6 if not...or match the rest of the house.

You haven't enough info provided to really answer.

Do you put the door trim on and tile up to it, or would you tile right to the door and have the trim go "over" it? Trim out the doors first. do people use a 'special' deeper jamb, or fur out the jamb? Why would it HAVE to be firred out? It's SUPPOSED to sit flush with the drywall. I will have a similar dilemma at the bottom - tile down to the baseboard? Usually tile walls don't utilize a baseboard. The tile goes straight to the floor. However, the times I've seen when baseboard WAS used, it went in first, and I tiled down to it. You want to make sure it has a profile where the top of it will be atleast as thick as the tile, though, so as to hide the edge.

FWIW, I have a tiled walls in my bathroom which just meet the marble tile of the bathroom floor. There are no baseboards in my bathrooms. It certainly simplifies cleaning as far as I'm concerned since there is no painted wall to deal with.

I'd say there is no way to go over it and have it look good as you'll be trying to cover the gap and that is going to look patched. Carefully pry the tile off and use the right tool - there are pry bars made for that type of work that if used carefully will leave very minimal damage. Then buy taller baseboards than what are there now and that will cover the potential damage to the walls of removing the original tile. Once the baseboards are up and caulked and painted you will be much happier with the overall result than if you try to go over the top.

Thank you for the info on posting etiquette iI’m new on here and I’m a bit lost. This is a different issue but i guess its about the same bathroom.

Yes the shower curb issue is decided. After speaking with my contractor again i will use the same quartz as my countertop. I will need to adjust the size of my backsplashes as they were larger than average, or i will need to do the splashes in tile but either way i should have enough in my slab for the curbs.

After adding up the cost of all the bullnose i would need i think i might need to consider schluter. We are doing 3 baths and our kitchen so all my choices multiply. What is the least visible schluter edge in your opinion?

Our ceilings are almost 9’ high. I dont have pictures as we havent started construction yet. As far as what style it is the cabinets are white shaker, countertops Pompeii pure white, and the faucets and tub/shower fittings are all from Delta’s trinsic line. The actual shower floor is 1x1 dark brown/charcoal squares. Shower surround and bath floor are 24x48 and remaining tub surround will be matching 4x24.

I had not heard of poly baseboard and i will look into that.

I have used all methods: wood baseboard matching rest of house, tile bullnose matching subway tile on bathroom wall and also created my own built up baseboard with glass tile to complement glass tile going on the wall. Those were remodels where I was doing one bath at a time and could concentrate on extra design details.

In the house we built last year, I just did matching wood baseboard in all the bathrooms, as it was simpler to plan and execute.

Thank you. I think im going to look at the poly version of my wood baseboards as it will be in kids bath directly next to the shower.
