I agree with springer and greg above. We have hardwood everywhere except bedrooms and bathrooms. Maintenance has been so much easier with the hardwood compared to all the carpet in the last house. Sounds like you are using multiple methods of "sweeping" and it's exhausting you. Swiffer makes a vacuum & swiffer in one for hardfloors called a Swiffer Sweeper-Vac. It's all you need for quick & easy daily floor cleanup. Usually I don't even use the Swiffer-Vac daily except for under the kids seats at the island and at the entry). I break out my O-Cedar Spray mop once a week or so for a quick damp mop after using the swiffer-vac. I fill the spray reservoir with Bona Hardwood cleaner. That would take your multi-step process to a single process/tool on a frequent basis (odds are as often as you would pull out the vacuum) + a second tool on a weekly (or so) basis. You will definitely reduce your cleaning time and your frustration level. Hope this helps!

I use water and vinegar too (distilled white) with microfiber cloths. No streaks, fresh smell, no need for drying if the cloths are wrung out really well. However...while that cleaning method works really well, I find that I have to clean the floors on my hands and knees. Yes! Oh, it's horrible! It's because our little dog is a slob, dribbling water all over. For some reason (his saliva??), the dried drops don't simply wipe off. It takes heavy pressure on the cloths, going over and over each drop until they disappear. I have the Bona cleaner but it's no more effective than water and vinegar. A mop just doesn't do it, unless I don't have the right one.

Can't help with SS because I don't have any (yet). I have a house full of "real" hardwood floors finished in plain old polyurethane. I just damp mop with a small amount of vinegar in warm water. I use a mop that has the microfiber pads that just velcro on to the base....LOVE those things! I also use this type of mop to wash walls with. I sweep/dust my floors with Swiffers. I will use my soft-bristed Old Cedar broom occasionally if I have had a busy day in the kitchen and have lots of crumbs on the floor or if "grit" has been packed in at the entry way. sweep with a soft-bristled Old Cedar broom before swiffereing. I also have read that Murphy's will "ruin" hardwood floors, in that it leaves a residue that prevents a new finish (when you are ready to refinish) from adhering. I was sick when my wonderful house sitter cleaned my Swedish finish floors with it. I also read it can soften/cloud the finish. I never was able to read/find what to do to try to undo the damage. They are fine now and it's been maybe 10 years, but don't know if they will ever be able to be refinished. ETA: here is something I found that might help: If you have solid hardwood with a urethane finish, using products like Murphys Oil Soap or Orange Glo can create a cloudy residue. To remove the residue, clean with a 1/2 vinegar, 1/2 water solution and a damp sponge -- Not overly wet. THEN dry with clean towels.
