Light up my kitchen like an operating room! And other issues
Comments (9)Lot of good comments here about the lighting, but can I chime in on the placement of your TV? No matter what you do, that's a lot of light in front of the screen, both from kitchen lights and from the windows. Then there's the noise factor TV vs Kitchen. Don't know who's going to be more distracted by whom in your situation. If you have any plans on home theatre, you're setting yourself up for a very difficult time positioning your speakers. Consider moving the TV into the Living Room, maybe opposite the Fireplace. When I was buying my last house, I looked at one home where the homeowner had installed 12 can lights in the master bedroom. A space maybe 12 x 15 feet. It was weird. Don't get carried away with those things....See MoreUndercabinet LED lighting - what brand did you use?
Comments (25)Darn it!!! I just collected all this info together with links, etc and GW lost it. grrrump. I'd really like others to weigh in on this summary please (that I'll be doing again); I think it will be helpful to have the info abstracted. I would like to estimate cost for 12" but it may be too hard to do that and I don't want to hold this up. But if anyone can at least order some of these options by relative cost eve that would be very helpful. TIA. Note that everyone likes their UC LEDs.... Seagull track w/ pods. expensive. transformer. Comments (5)We just went through a similar exercise, retrofitting the recessed fixtures in our family room and breakfast area to match the new LED recessed lights in the adjoining gut-remodeled kitchen. 4000k and above just looked too bright and clinical. (Wife walked in and said, "The table looks ready for an autopsy. I'm not eating there!") You'll find noticeable differences even among lights all rated with the same Kelvin number. We settled on 3000-3500 for everything, even when retrofitting our hallways. (We thought softer, yellower light would be fine there, but no. Once the world brightens up, there's no turning back.) BTW, I think the "whiteness" of LED lights "settles down" a bit as they age. At least that is my impression from our kitchen remodel....See MoreTemperature of LED Bulbs
Comments (16)I have found that my color preference is similar to Lars -- a bit either side of 3000K, but it can be hardest to find bulbs in that range. I can find 2700K more often and I will not go lower than that and I won't go over 3500k. When we walk the dogs at night, it surprises me how many houses have lights on in such different colors through their house. It would drive me bonkers, but I know I see color differently and it has been a thing for me ever since we started getting so many different kinds of bulbs. One has a dining room that is so cold it seems creepy to me, but I guess others don't see it? Bbstx, I would go higher in lumens or watt equivalence rather than color temperature if you want better light at the kitchen sink, You don't have to have that blue white light to get better or brighter light. ETA: we changed nearly all of our bulbs to LEDs years ago. We started with changing to enclosed can replacements (no dark gaps around the bulbs) in our family room because we needed to get new bulbs for a couple anyway and the trim rings were starting to break. At the time, one store had those for $50-60 each. We pulled the trigger when we found another store had the same exact units for $24. Not only did we notice a drop in the electric bill, we noticed a drop in the temperature in the room during the summer....See MoreBuehl
