I think changing your coffee table will offer a lot of change inaddition to art.

I agree with roarah. The coffee table seems out of place, especially with the classic (and beautiful!) end tables. I find that I also need to occasionally refresh what I have on/in shelf unit. I start with taking everything off and then only adding back on what I really treasure. Sometimes I bring “new” items from some place else in the house or from the basement. The portion of your unit behind the glass doors seems dark - perhaps more colorful, bright items there would be attractive.

For above the sofa, to repeat the advise seen on this site often, only use a mirror if it reflects something worth seeing - like windows or something special.

Agree with above comment, plus add a unique area rug.

I think the mirror reflects a glass window or door not the bookshelves in real life but I might be mistaken.

Elizabeth - A few more ideas for you to consider.

• I would remove the large plant and wire stand between the two blue chairs. It looks like the people in those two chairs would have to converse while looking through the plant. The stand, like the coffee table, doesn’t blend with your end tables. I would bring the two chairs closer together and put something substantial but low between them, like a chest. Is there somewhere else for the plant?
• Remove whatever is on top of your shelf unit. Is that some electronic equipment in the middle shelf on the right? Remove if it is no longer used. If it is still used, could it be moved down a shelf so it was hidden behind the door when not in use?
• Contrary to some advise, I find family photos a wonderful addition to decor in a room like this. Perhaps some of them could be refreshed with new frames that were less casual? Smaller photos also benefit from matting. I have found a good selection of inexpensive frames at Michael’s if there are those stores near you or they have a website. Most of their stores have a framing department and they will make custom mats for a pre-made frame. I matted some treasured family photos with fabric mats that made them suit a living room more.
• Your lamps look lovely centered on the tables but seem lonely. A small framed photo, a small piece of china or brass would make the table tops seem more complete.

Nice room but not too inviting for me only because everything is so symmetrical and not arranged for comfy just sitting & visiting. I like the round end tables but they’re not useful for person sitting on couch as too close to wall. I like the chairs but once person sits on them, no place to set anything down. Agree the wall unit could use color & rearranging. Snowman is pretty cute & jumps out with color. Everything else requires up close viewing to see - photos, glassware etc. The blue bowl on top of unit could be used on a lower shelf & maybe filled with color. Some photos ok but too many in the entire unit. Hard to suggest alternative furniture arrangements without seeing room from more angles. Looks like there might be a piano on another rug at bottom left of pic - is that in same room? As for mirror - it does look like there’s a window across room & behind chairs so it might be ok. It does seem too high on the wall though so maybe lower it a bit. Could you try rearranging the chairs & plants on other side of room? Place the big Peace Lily plant in corner next to wall unit. Pull the 2 chairs off the corners of rug & place closer together with one of the round tables between them including its lamp. Or, leave the one chair at right lower corner of picture, slide the other chair that’s closest to wall unit over & place them so both can use the round end table between them. Move foot stool over by chairs to invite use of it. Again, hard to give specifics without seeing that side of room. My suggestions are meant to ’loosen’ the arrangement to be softer & more conversational. As for color, I like your sofa too & it’s really the only texture in the room. The green pillows are reading Mint green to me - not great with either chairs or sofa even though I think that color is in sofa. Maybe put the pillows that are on chairs on the sofa & I’d look for pillows the color between blue in sofa & blue green of chairs. Look for smaller lumbar pillows to use on the chairs - a better size for chairs.

Your room is traditional so just changing one item isn't going to update it. There are many small changes you can make. The mirror is hung too high. I actually put 2 mirrors over my sofa to reflect light from the windows (room is N facing). You could paint the cabinet. You could add peel and stick wallpaper to the back walls of the cabinet to lighten it up. Get some more interesting pillows for the sofa.

Get a white slipcover for the sofa. Replace the coffee table with a square white parsons table and center it on the rug. Hang a nice large abstract canvas for over the sofa. Paint the room In Benjamin Moore Healing Aloe.

Just curious as to what the piece of furniture is in the bottom left hand corner of your picture. I'd also like to see the otherside of the room. I love your chesterfield and chairs so I would definately keep them.

I’m a big fan of mixing patterns and colors, and think your room could go in that direction and look great. I like the pillows jck shows.

Skirted, floral furniture has been making a comeback with UK designers for a while now — I’m seeing it more and more with well-known American designers, recently, too.

Is it a look you like … traditional with mixing in other styles, using more patterns, a layered look?

I think editing your wall unit would look nice, and art over your sofa. New lamps, possibly new coffee table … we just need to see more of the room.

Until then, I’m playing around with rugs … and the idea of layering them for interest.

Find a throw in the same color as your chairs and put that on the sofa. Eliminate all the pillows. Keep it simple.

Update the lamps. The lamps @Home Interiors with Ease posted are beautiful.

Update the coffee table. Find something in the same tone as your end tables.

Pull everything off your shelving unit, throw out, donate and purge. Keep only what you love and update the frames, etc. Decorate sparingly on the shelves. Large cream colored Vases.

You need to add art above the sofa. Gallery wall would be best.

Keep your area rug. It works.

These Monet prints might look lovely over your couch.

Round nesting tables would be a nice update for your coffee table.

You could buy metal art the hang behind the couch on the wall that won't look too heavy and it would feel the space or you could get a painting 2/3 3/4 the length of the couch I like the idea of a round table the top could be the light color in the bottom could be the darker color I like that round table there or a smothered table or a nesting table but go by not working your room cuz of your furniture your end tables

Could you move the sofa to face the bookcase and flank the bookcase with the two chairs. Then put a sofa table behind the sofa with sone stools or pottery in favorite colors from sofa fabric. This would look more open and inviting for conversation.
