Update on Office in Living Room

I hung some artwork, got a chair and tried to make things looks a bit more finished.

I need to get a better, more colorful pillow for my new chair.

Also, the art is deinitely visually heavy. I am thinking I need some minimal scones to replace the bulky black ones.

I know I could use a better lamp as well. Oh and some curtains too!

Thoughts? Suggestions??

BTW, my chair is very comfortable to sit on all day long! Funny, I already owned it.

I also need to clean up and hide all of my wires.

MTN, I will remove the original fixture before taking the new one out of the box. I can always return. I completely understand what you are saying and I will ensure that there is not a large hole in the wall from this current sconce.

I have the dimensions for insallation, so will make sure there is not going to be an issue.

Swing arm sconces are GREAT next to a bed for reading.....not a good look just stuck on a wall like that. A stationary sconce...like this one...maybe. Link

Thank you very much. I figured it would be better to pair back and simplify things. My husband likes the cabinets but I thought about painting them black or grey, if I can't convince him it would be better to remove them completely. Love the idea about the black frame on the fireplace.

Is there enough room behind the sofa for a very narrow console table? It could hold a lamp (or two) instead of using any end tables. I could imagine myself sitting sideways on the sofa facing the fireplace and using the table for my coffee cup while I talked on the phone. There is something about the drapes that bothers me. They are beautiful and a lovely color but seem to block the beautiful window. Could you have all the panels at the two ends instead having four groups? I, too, have struggled with a backdrop for ZOOM calls. Remember that on Zoom you see only what is directly behind the person and a couple feet to each side, not the whole wall. So only a few feet of the bottom any large panels would show. You may have to make a trade off on what looks good in the room versus what looks good on ZOOM. For my ZOOM calls, I ended up not using my desk. I took an unused corner of another room and put an old laptop on a small table to make a ZOOM “studio.” I put a console table behind my chair with a large Grecian bust and a small topiary plant over one shoulder and a tall pair of brass candle sticks with two small family photos over the other. The wall directly behind me is blank and coincidently is painted a color that contrasts with my coloring, which also looks better on ZOOM.

Formal Living Room into Office

You can absolutely use a living room as an office! I've been using mine for almost 20 years now. It measures 13' x 24' and serves double duty--when I need to work, it's an office, and when I have visitors it's a nice sitting room. I also have a center hall Colonial like you have, with living room on the left of the foyer and dining room with entrance to kitchen and family room on the right. I started out using the small sun porch (off the living room) as my office, but it was small and had too much sun glare. So I moved the desk, computer and printer to the living room, and kept the bookcases and filing cabinets in the sun room. There are no doors closing it off since (1) the work area is in the back of the room, invisible from the foyer, and (2) hardly anyone comes to our front door! Here are photos: Living room with desk, computer and printer (in bay window). Also has lots of seating, piano, and fireplace. Bookcases, filing drawers and various office-y must-haves: The sun porch also has a small table where I can work as well. The chest of drawers to the left holds paper, and other office supplies. If I had to, I could move the bookcases, chest and filing cabinets to the living room. As you can see, it doesn't look like a commercial office--all the furniture is residential type items.

Ooh, I love that first sconce Jilly just posted. Not crazy about the pleated shade (dust traps) but I love the shape of the base. Not crazy about the sconces with the long vertical piece below the lamp.

I think sconces placed as you have them are for ambient light, not task lighting, so I would not have adjustable arms and I would probably not use down lighting either. You run the risk of it looking like it was leftover from another furniture set-up IMHO.

These are battery operated and from Amz for $115 for the pair. Yours may be hardwired so not an issue, but I am considering this option for a space in my house that needs a little decor lighting.

I don't think you've hit the happy medium between farmhouse with the adjustable arms and formal traditional with the brass and shades.

akt - I would not think so but I really have NO clue! I think hard-wired is superior but I don't need light enough in my space to warrant the expense of installing hard-wire sconces. I wonder if these could go over the top of the hard wired "space" and then you could just use something like this until you were ready to move or change.

We need someone with expertise to weigh in!!

I believe if you removed a hardwired electrical items, you have to cover it with a metal plate. Your local codes may vary on this.

I would look for another hardwired option. I think you have lots of attractive options but I would,first and foremost, choose something the right footprint.

Yes. I will certainly make sure of that.

In regards to your question if managment will care, they will not. No one has sconces but me. The guy who lived here before I did was a maintainence man who added them and a bunch of other upgrades. I guess I am fortunate in that regard! He got a new range, fridge, toilet and installed penants over the island.

He also added stone all around my island which looks so much better than the apartments who only have drywall around the island. :)

I've looked at hundreds of sconces so far. I think a glass shade isn't right for the LR. A frosted shade makes it look bathroomy. Most of the shiny brass looks bathroomy too and many have a clear shade, which disappears on the wall. Then there's the issue of price.

I found this on Build. I think it looks like it belongs in a LR but it's not too formal, the color will stand out on the wall, it's in the gold family but a soft gold, it should complement your paintings and desk, and the price is great. It takes 60W candelabra bulbs and is 12 x 6" so the footprint should be close to what you have now.

I like the double ones too and the middle one that barncatz shows is delicate enough for a pair to work without making it look too busy. I didn't look at double sconces because I assumed the price would increase too much.

Eileen, I did a mock up with the double lights that barn posted, but those looked even more formal!

I am now reconsidering my light choice. What do you guys think of the light fixture on the right? It is a sloppy mockup and would look nice in real life!

I'm wondering if there might be too many lamp shades in such close proximity but its hard to find sconces without shades - so maybe lighter shades that don't stand out so much would be better? I can't help but feel that the dark shades are a distraction from the art and kinda seem heavy. But maybe I'm in the minority. FWIW I like these two that barncatz posted earlier or this other one from Pottery Barn.

The nice thing about the candle styles is it will make it easier to find a lamp. You really only need a task lamp though because you've added so much interest already.

Agree with Eileen. A task lamp for the desk would be perfect with sconces having shades - or with any sconces for that matter…
