Sconce Height Recommendation

We are installing two pair of sconces on opposite walls in a great room. Wall height is 9’ with a 14’ vaulted ceiling. What is the best suggested height for the sconces in this large 20’ x 30’ room? The sconces are 27” long x 10” wide and will be used for effect only as we have sufficient overhead recessed lighting in the vault?

I use the eye level option, as my home is not huge and I generally walk past all my sconce lights. that's 66 inches centered for me. I always use a covered bulb fixture (Don't like looking INTO a bare bulb) I often use up & Down shinging sconces.

If your room is large, think about how they look from underneath.

a panoramic view of the room might be helpful to get other comments.

If you are putting cans in the ceiling over the front door DO NOT put them on the same switch as the porch light, sometimes you dont need to be light up like a christmas tree. but rather just have the porch light on for some ambiance when needed If the door is 8 ft, I would put the box about 10 inches out and 8 inches down. If it was my build I would put a stem hung warehouse shade then center a light to the open wall space and hang art or address sign under it. I really good idea for you would be go to home depo pick up a cheap light that is about the right size and hold it up to the door.. for placement

thank you cawaps, All of my mockups with the single sconce looked a little dinky. It didn't occur to me to do something linear at all. I like those lights you chose. what do you think of this type of adjustable light? i thought perhaps it might be functional in a vanity area. my daughter is still young , so it would be a while before she needs something for makeup though. but do you think it would it go?

My mirrors are not medicine cabinets as in the photo, but they will be recessed with a casing surround. Again, thanks for bringing this to my attention. The mirror will be recessed about 1/2-3/4" once the casing is on, I believe, so the sconce would actually extend an additional 1/2 to 3/4" out from mirror when attached to the casing. I understand why you'd recommend the shallower configuration. Thank you so much!

those will be like heat lamps over people's heads and headbangers when they try to stand up!!!! I would not put scones there. the worst case put a rail light where the center light is and you could have lights shine down on the table.

The installation height of the sconce depends on the purpose for which you need a wall lamp. It is important to position the lamp in such a way that no one hits it.

If you just need a lamp as a decor, then there is no right height. Only if you want, for example, to make the room visually wider or higher, then there are some nuances.
