Ivan--Please do NOT bare-root the rose when you transplant it. That is what almost killed the Bolero. Roses cannot support leaves unless many fine roots are in firm contact with the soil, because leaves pump out lots of moisture, and fleshy roots cannot take up much moisture. When you move to a bigger pot, keep most of the root ball intact and fill the extra space with a similar potting mix. It's OK if you lose some mix from the outside of the root ball. If it is necessary to transplant bare root, you must strip off all the foliage, which is a big unnecessary setback for the plant. However, it can be done with roses too large to get a meaningful root ball, or when moving roses to a different garden.

Carol, I don't think you could go wrong with Dee-Lish. Its ADR designation should make it an unlikely black spotter. It's too soon to report on BS on my Dee-Lish, and I do spray, but I plan to test DL and pass over it when spraying its neighbors to see what happens. It could be quite winter hardy, obviously irrelevant for you since you container grow your roses, but for me it's critical. You know, I am finding ADR roses for the most part are about as BS proof as the Knock Outs, but winter hardiness is very variable from variety to variety. I believe the test gardens in Germany on average range between zone 6 and 7, and the roses tested, again I only suspect this, could be grafted, so winter hardiness could be partially attributable to being grafted also, not just based upon on the scion's winter hardy attributes. Grown own root, the ADR winners could be less winter hardy. This point, I need to further investigate. My Earth Angel is a wonder: no blackspot, no winter kill without any protection, great flowers and scent. My Pink Enchantment, black spot free, dies to the ground WITH winter protection. Could it not die back over winter in Germany's warmer zone test gardens, but dies back big time in my colder zone garden? Both Earth Angel and Pink Enchantment are ADR winners. Questions, question....that's part of the challenge and draw of growing roses. Moses

Dave, She was planted in a prime spot in my garden, nothing better available. If in the spring she survives enough (I did not winterize her this fall....punishment!), to be transplantable, I will offer her to my niece. Sheila could be right about Evelyn liking heat. She did not skip a beat in flowering continuity all season long, even through the intense radiating heat from so many close buildings, sidewalks, and streets that my garden gets. I would not really expect her to do better for my niece, going into a garden with some shade, as she has. Also, Evelyn, my particular rose bush, not my niece!, may have been a runt from day one, not able to shine anywhere. Who knows? Although her flower output was great as far as quick repeats, and normal size goes, which contradicts everything else. Moses

Cynthia, Thanks for your input. I'm sorry your Dee-Lish is not doing anything. I hope mine does not mirror yours. I plan to winterize mine at least this coming winter in spite of its ADR designation. I am finding ADR for me means mostly black spot resistance, but not sufficient winter hardiness to put on any size. With severe winter dieback on so many ADRs I have tried (except for Earth Angel, which by the way, may turn out to be a once blooming rose, it's repeat is so pitiful....but mine is young and just may need time to mature), I am wondering how much credence I should put on an ADR winning rose. Really Cynthia, my main rose growing problem is my obsession with fragrance, which is pretty limiting from the standpoint of fragrant roses' notorious serious disease issues, not to mention winter hardiness problems, too. If fragrance was not my reqirement, especially a rose's, no equal from among any other flower, I would grow daylilies or dahlias! Moses
