Wow. Never expected this to be such a popular topic. After reading the Young House Love blog, I WAS motivated to do some reorganizing of my linen closet. I keep towels, bathroom cleaning supplies, a hamper, and cosmetics/health & beauty stuff in ours. Sheets are in another, smaller hall closet. First, I checked the expiration dates on cold medicines, etc., and found a lot of stuff expired. That was easy to pitch. THEN, I looked at old make up, etc. (Much harder to part with, even though I haven't used some of it in ages...) Also pitched half-used bottles of shampoo I tried but didn't like, etc. It felt VERY wasteful. I went to the Christmas Tree Shop and bought 8 square baskets - 2 of 4 different sizes. (They actually nested inside each other.) Nearly $80. (A-Hem? For a BATHROOM CLOSET? Hmmm.) Took them home and was thankful they didn't really work to hold the stuff the way I had hoped. Returned them. Since I used to be a Longaberger Basket consultant, I have an attic full of baskets. I decided that, in the meantime, I would just grab some of those baskets and use them to corral my cosmetics, etc. It works, but isn't as neat as I'd like. I also have two plastic 'drawers' that I use. One small one has 3 little drawers - I use it for eye makeup and lipsticks. The other is bigger (about 8x10x16 deep) that I have cold medicines and anything else I don't know where to put. I guess the mix of plastic and baskets, to me, make the whole effect a little sloppy. While at the Christmas Tree Shop, I noticed photo boxes for $1.99. They stack neatly on top of each other and have a little metal label spot on the side. I may go back for those. Would especially work for stuff like first aid items and other things not used daily. So...if I ever get the closet looking 'photo' ready, I'll post a picture... Parsuzi. PS I also was taught the 'right' way to fold fitted sheets so they fold flat, but mine never look that nice. I don't generally put them on a table to fold, though. That might be the key.

Laxsuper, thanks for letting me know you enjoyed the pics. :o) Yeah, maybe some of you gals can get your DHs inspired if you show them this thread! I'm on my own with my garage. And quite frankly, I dunno why I can't have a bit of feminine decor in there. I don't mean pink and flowers, but gee whiz. I keep looking for the decor I want and haven't found it yet. I think Susieq's is the best so far. It's at least got color that isn't grey. I know a lot of you love grey, but I sure don't. I live in grey western WA and we're sick of it out here. Lindy, I'm so glad I could inspire you! Don't those floors make a big difference? My findings agree with you... those tile/mat floors cost an arm and a leg. Couldn't you two do stain and stencil like Susieq? If you google it you'll find there's all kinds of beautiful looks to that stain. Yeah, that elevator is weird and I'll bet it cost a lot. Any idea what he paid? Men and their toys! Nicole, your cabs are gorgeous, and FREE is my favorite price. Unfortunately for some of us, you need a DH and a truck to get anything like that, and we have neither (and to be honest, want neither - lol). Lynn, frosted film is a very good idea... let in the light, keep out the snoops. How about the faux stained window film? Even prettier. Eeeeeeew on spiders and spider traps! You just made me shiver hard all over. I really love the red cabs, too, and the red on the floors. Can you paint your cabs red? Show him these pictures and see if it lights a flame under his fanny. If that doesn't work, show the pics to the guy next door on both sides. I'll betcha if the guy next door does it, your DH will want to do it... and I mean that to everyone. It's always a game of "mine is bigger/better than yours" with the guys, isn't it? hahaha Lacombe, oh yeah -- it's a big fat industry now, with new companies sprung up all over in the last few years. The pix at your link are gorgeous. But where's the feminine touch? Who sez garages are just for men? Marie, those fancy floors hold up well from what I've read online in chat groups and so on (from real people, not just sellers). Naturally, the rubber matt ones are great, but $$$ woo woo. I think concrete stain would be fine with your salt. We don't have salted roads here. We just slip n slide. True. I'm still looking for garages with more of a woman's touch and sense of color. Why not?

Yes it is very hard. That move was especially hard because is was from the 1850 house to the 1200 house. AND we actually traded houses with the people so we had to deal with moving in on each other. Was much harder for me to get out as I had one third more stuff and then some than they did. I ended up moving it into the big shop building at the smaller house then having to move it into the house as I could. Was really tricky. Good thing all of us were friends. And remained friends through all of it. AND DH and I were working as cemetery sextons so mowing 4 days a week for several hours trimming with weed eaters and changing irrigation lines and then coming home to pack. I had a couple of melt downs. We have said this before.This is the last move. I think this time I believe it. We totally moved ourselves with no help but one couch at the end of the day I could not lift. We are getting too old to move again. Why we tried very hard to do everything we could to make this house the perfect house for us. So far I believe it is. There is always some thing you wish had been done different. Most things can be worked around. We are both very happy with how this house lives or how we live with this house. The best we have had for us. Chris

In our old house, like nini, everyone we knew well entered the back door that leads into the kitchen and it drove me NUTS! We even had a little space in a tiny "hallway" and inevitably all the coats, shoes, bags, hats, change, wallets, and other junk ended up cluttering up my island. I even had a small desk to the side that couldn't hold it all. It was so frustrating. When we moved that was one of the top criteria for our new house...that there not be a main entrance from outside into my kitchen. That said, if that is all you have and you can't change that, then I would find some way to contain it. If not, you will have to be the crazy woman herding everyone's things into the designated places daily. I have not seen specific "closets" in kitchens but I'm sure they exist. I would look at houzz.com for ideas. I am linking the search on there under "Entry" and I clicked on "popular" at the top. Lots of neat ideas!
