seeking exterior paint colors for cottage

Greetings! I’ll looking for ideas for exterior paint colors for this adorable little 850 sq ft cottage I just bought in northern Michigan. My very first own home! Should I add shutters? Already dreaming of window boxes when the weather warms. Thanks in advance.

Love it! I don’t think shutters are necessary but window boxes would look terrific. As to colors, there are lots of choices. A mint or sage green with white trim would be adorable. Maybe a peach or salmon color door.

What a cutie! No shutters as a lot of the windows don’t have room. I personally find window boxes to be a PITA but you do you.

Mint green with white trim and a navy door. And a colorful doormat as big as the stoop.

What an adorable house! I grew up with those white frame houses with black trim, & to me, they always looked stark & maybe institutional. & this is what I thought when I was too young to know those words! I think with a pure white background, you can use pure clear colors like red, which is a great "country" color for houses, or deep cool pastels, like the gray you have now or maybe a deeper gray. Hunter green is also a traditional color for farmhouse trim, & it would play off the white white beautifully. I'm a fan of Behr paints from Home Depot, but a lot depends on your climate; we have lots of summer & you may have lots of winter or lots of salt spray. This forum's participants have a vast pool of experience a great willingness to share, so I'm sure somebody will give you expert advice on brand & type.

This is what I think would look terrific for your cottage The pic has the colors posted in the comments, I'll put them here for you but it is worth the time to look at the home here on houzz, just click 'more info'. It is truly a nice Florida cottage with great colors SW 2250 "Fjord" - Siding SW 7627 "White Heron" - Trim, soffit, and porch ceiling SW 2821 " Downing Stone" - Steps and brick base And I love how the orange pillows bring out the color. Ask your painter if they use SW or Dunn Edwards. Have them pick up a quart of each of your two choices in the preferred brand, and then have them paint a 4 foot wide swath from floor to ceiling on the front wall.

You can get away with a grey and tie it into the roof but that almond has a warmer undertone. Because the brick is closer to the siding than the roof I'd probably consider the siding color more than the roof. A "greige" that doesn't veer into purple territory woukd work too. Depending on what you choose id probably replace the garage doors and paint the front door.

So cute, congratulations!!🎉🍾🎊 the sky is the limit on colors. I would get a full glass storm door so you can see all of the front door. No shutters.

It could really be any color(s) you like. This is one combination I enjoy. I do think punctuating everything with some bright white is a nice look when using brighter colors. It really just depends on if you like subtle, “blend in with nature colors” or prefer brighter statement colors. Congratulations and best wishes for much enjoyment as you make it your own.

Thank you!! I’m leaning to blue…gray blue, colonial blue with a bright door color. Like the darker blue with orange. And yes…I will switch out the front storm door with a full glass…or was thinking of just removing the storm door all together and paint the inside front door.

The house is adorable. I actually like the yellow, bright as it is. No shutters, and yes, replace the storm door. You live in northern Michigan, you definitely need a storm door. I do prefer one with a lot of glass, but, a requirement for me, is that it also has the pull down storm to reveal a screen. Its pretty nice to be able to open the top a bit, and let fresh air into the house. I have a full glass storm door so I can leave the front door open and let the light in. 🙂

A short cut could be to paint the trim ..even just the roof trim in a pretty contrasting color…or to match the door
