Comments (21)Thank you all for your thoughts. It is so helpful to read a variety of perspectives. Thank you for the info Annie. Maybe a winter project (if the built in benches survive that long--just joking, I am resigned to dealing with it the best I can as is). Bronwynsmom: yep. I didn't want to come across as overly dramatic, but it does indeed sap my energy. My kids prefer lounging on the stairs over the benches and it just makes me cry a little bit inside each time I see one of them on the stairs. And yes, intentional over dramatization in effect! Les: I will look into various upholstry/cusjhioning possibilities. This seems to get pricy quick. I am definitely thinking of making some myself or modifying less expensive ones. Francoise: I have thouth about the deeper seat portions. The parts that hinge up for the storage or only in certain sections, so I cannot just put in larger hinged tops. Actually, maybe I could. Hm, I am going to look into this more. If I can make larger ones, even just where the lids hinge, I could still replace the original ones if needed. But then it might be odd having only certain parts of the benches extend out farther. Unless I make them kind of T shaped to fill in the gaps. Not sure that makes sense unless you can hear me thinking. Teacats: I do think painting the bannister is a possibility. Apparently the house used to have cabinets that matched the bannister, but previous owners had the current cabinets and breakfast nook put in. Updating the bannister all around would be my preference. Grandma: taking out the backs would give us an extra 2 inches it looks like. I am worried that if we try to do that we will mess up somethign along the way. I don't know if it is just us...but any project we undertake becmoes about a gazillion times more complicated than it originally seemed. Geo: If you have little kids, I think the banquette seating is a great asset. Even when we first moved in, almost 3 years ago, my boys were young (small) enough to have friends over and everyone would squeeze into the benches and do projects, have snacks, etc. Deeper and taller seats would definitely be better for people over 6ft. It is interesting the different styles of tables suggested. I don't really know what style this cabinetry is even considered. To me it is more formal that what I would chose were I remodeling a kitchen. Comments (9)You seem to be drawn to West Elm style. What about one of their rugs? I don't think of your floor as being busy or having an actual pattern, so I wouldn't worry about that. I think you could use something fun and colorful. Comments (7)I'd fill in that one railing at the minimum. How do you plan on placing the bench? if you want that 3 sided bench, it would be best if all rails were gone. if you want to do an L bench, you can keep the round table. (if you refinish it and get chairs it would look really cute) where these shelves are, would be where your one set of railing is. notice the round table though. If you want to have an L shape, or the U shape, you're prob going to have to use the round table. Why don't you measure out the bench depth/height (wherever you want the bench) and then measure out a rectangle. don't forget to leave room for legs and bodies to get in and out. hard to see, but the shorter L portion is against the other rail U shape bench. I'd remove all of the railing and do solid half walls You could do a bench like this against the wall, bring ina rectangle and situate it like this. if you do that the railing could prob stay or like this. the railing would be where this window is. Do you have enough room to do a rectangle? Or, leave the railing in the middle, put a bench on the wall and put another bench against this far railing (and make into a half wall). two benches will face each other. you have the perfect inset spot there to place the bench. then just do a table in the middle. Work with what you have. this is pretty max'ed out w the bookcase but the straight bench allows chairs on short ends of table ...note they have super big windows and they managed without the L shape...See MoreAnnie Deighnaugh

Hard to get colors photographing into the light...the close up is better.
I went fabric shopping for ideas and swatches...
The beige is the wall color. I saw the embroidered print and fell in love with it and thought throw pillows...but then I thought it was too "bedroom-y" for the space. The upper blue texture is a runner up, the bottom is in first place to reupholster the cushions and the seat backs as it has the more saturated blue, but some life to it with the lighter threads woven in...I'm looking to brighten the place some.Annie Deighnaugh

I'm not sure I'd do the dark blue on the seats... I really like the khaki you have now. And since it is just 2 adults, I think you can go light. Maybe use sunbrella.
The prints you chose for the pillows are very traditional. While they are classic, to me they don't feel like a refresh per se. I might go with a somewhat less fussy pattern. Eg like Rifle? (not necc this colorway).
But also, do you like having pillows there or do people just move them out of the way to sit?

last yearThanks, AD, for the link. Because Joann’s doesn’t sell swatches, I had to find another source for it. I thought the color rendering in the two pictures was interesting. Same fabric, same brand, same colorway, same everthing but they look so different in the photos. The one on the left is from Fabric Guru; on the right from Joann’s. It’ll be interesting to see what the fabric looks like IRL.

But I find an 18" rabbit disconcerting ,and the back end of the fox reminds me too much of failed photos I've taken where I only get animal butt shots.

last yearlast modified: last yearI worked on this mood board after i read just your first post before you posted your own choices and i picked some very similar options to your first love fabric and some like the premade pillows. I assumed you were making the pillows for you make perfect window treatments and then forgot to post it lol. I like your first fabric alot! I also like the more current navy and coral one at the bottom of my mood board too.

My two favorites...I'm leaning toward pimpernel...Note...blue fabric is not stripey and uneven...it's just it was creased and I cut and paste the photo to get a large enough area to show....
